KKN Gurugram Desk | Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli’s recent retirement from Test cricket has opened up new avenues in his illustrious career. Despite stepping away from the international red-ball format, Kohli may soon grace English pitches, not in national colors, but as part of Middlesex County Cricket Club’s lineup. The club has expressed keen interest in signing Kohli for the County Championship or the Metro Bank One-Day Cup, leveraging the allure of playing at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground .

Middlesex’s Interest in Kohli

Alan Coleman, Middlesex’s Director of Cricket, acknowledged Kohli’s stature, stating, “Virat Kohli is the most iconic player of his generation, so of course we are interested in having that conversation” . The club has a history of attracting international stars, having previously signed players like AB de Villiers and Kane Williamson, often with financial collaboration from the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). Officials have indicated a willingness to similarly support a potential deal for Kohli.

Kohli’s Continued Passion for Cricket

Kohli’s retirement announcement on May 12, 2025, marked the end of a remarkable Test career spanning 123 matches, amassing 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries . However, his statement did not mention stepping away from first-class cricket entirely, leaving the door open for domestic opportunities like county cricket. This potential move would not only allow Kohli to continue playing the longer format but also provide English fans a chance to witness his prowess in a different setting.

Potential Matchups and Schedule

Should Kohli join Middlesex, he could feature in matches at Lord’s against teams like Lancashire, potentially facing off against England’s James Anderson. Such encounters would be highly anticipated, given the players’ storied histories. Middlesex’s home fixtures in September, including games against Derbyshire and Gloucestershire, could serve as platforms for Kohli’s county debut.

BCCI’s Stance and Kohli’s Options

While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) restricts contracted players from participating in overseas T20 leagues like the Blast and The Hundred, there are no such limitations for first-class or List A competitions. This policy nuance allows Kohli the flexibility to explore opportunities in formats akin to Test cricket, aligning with his expertise and experience.

Historical Context and Previous Attempts

Kohli’s interest in county cricket isn’t new. In 2018, he was set to play for Surrey to acclimate to English conditions ahead of India’s tour but was sidelined due to a neck injury. This prior intent underscores his appreciation for the English domestic circuit and the value he places on adapting to diverse playing environments.

Virat Kohli’s potential engagement with Middlesex represents a significant development in his post-Test career. It offers a unique blend of continuing his passion for the longer format while contributing to the rich tapestry of county cricket. As discussions progress, fans worldwide await confirmation, eager to see one of cricket’s modern greats don the Middlesex colors at Lord’s.
