KKN Gurugram Desk | In a shocking incident that has shaken the residents of Muzaffarpur, an e-rickshaw suddenly caught fire near Berua on the National Highway (NH) under the Gaighat police station area, leading to the tragic death of a woman and causing serious injuries to several other passengers.

The fatal accident in Muzaffarpur took place earlier today when a family of seven was en route to Madhubani. As per eyewitness accounts, thick smoke began to rise from the e-rickshaw without warning, and within moments, the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames.

E-Rickshaw Catches Fire Near Raj Hotel in Gaighat

According to initial reports, the electric rickshaw was carrying seven members of the same family, all of whom were reportedly traveling from Muzaffarpur to Madhubani. The fire broke out suddenly when the vehicle reached near Raj Hotel on Berua NH, causing panic among passengers and bystanders.

Despite the passengers’ desperate attempts to escape, the fire spread so quickly that 50-year-old Kamarul Khatoon, one of the family members, was trapped inside. She was unable to escape and tragically died on the spot due to severe burns.

Cause of Fire Under Investigation

Although the exact cause of the e-rickshaw fire in Muzaffarpur is yet to be determined, preliminary witness statements suggest that there may have been a short-circuit in the battery system of the electric vehicle. Locals noticed smoke rising from underneath the seat area, and flames erupted shortly thereafter. Passengers, including the driver, immediately jumped off to save themselves, but Kamarul Khatoon was unable to get out in time.

Several people present at the scene attempted to douse the flames using available water and fire extinguishers from nearby shops. However, the fire had already spread extensively, making rescue efforts too late to save the victim.

Two in Critical Condition at SKMCH

Two other members of the family who sustained severe burn injuries have been admitted to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur. Doctors have confirmed that their condition remains critical, and intensive medical care is underway. The identities of the injured individuals have not yet been released by authorities, but sources confirm that all victims were closely related.

Seven Family Members Affected in Total

All seven passengers belonged to the same extended family, as per local police sources. They were reportedly on a personal visit to their native village in Madhubani district. The family had hired the e-rickshaw as a cost-effective mode of transport, unaware of the potential danger that awaited them on their journey.

Local police from the Gaighat station arrived at the scene shortly after the incident. The charred remains of the e-rickshaw have been seized for forensic investigation, and the body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem examination at SKMCH.

Electric Vehicle Safety Under Scrutiny

This tragic Muzaffarpur e-rickshaw fire incident has once again raised serious concerns regarding the safety of electric vehicles in India, especially in rural and semi-urban areas. E-rickshaws, though environmentally friendly and cost-efficient, often lack adequate safety features and maintenance, particularly in smaller towns where they are operated independently without strict regulation.

Experts have long warned about the risk of battery overheating, poor wiring, and substandard charging practices, all of which can lead to catastrophic failures like fire or explosion. With the increasing push for electric mobility in India, especially for last-mile transportation, there is a growing demand for stricter quality control and routine checks on these vehicles.

Locals Demand Action and Compensation

Residents of the area, deeply disturbed by the tragic accident, have demanded a thorough investigation and compensation for the victim’s family. Some have also called for mandatory safety checks and driver training programs for e-rickshaw operators in the region.

“This is not the first time we’ve seen an e-rickshaw catch fire. There needs to be stricter rules and enforcement to prevent such incidents. Today, a woman has lost her life—tomorrow, it could be anyone,” said a local shopkeeper who witnessed the event unfold.

The district administration of Muzaffarpur has yet to release an official statement regarding compensation or further safety measures but has assured that the incident will be fully investigated.

Growing Use of E-Rickshaws in Bihar

In recent years, e-rickshaws have become a lifeline for short-distance travel in cities like Muzaffarpur, Patna, and Gaya. With fuel prices rising and environmental concerns increasing, many drivers and passengers prefer electric vehicles as an affordable and sustainable option. However, the infrastructure and regulatory framework for ensuring the safety of such vehicles lag behind their rapid adoption.

This accident highlights the urgent need for:

  • Better quality control on battery systems

  • Driver awareness programs

  • Regular vehicle inspections

  • Emergency response training for local authorities

The Muzaffarpur e-rickshaw fire tragedy is a grim reminder of the risks associated with unregulated electric vehicle operations. As the country embraces clean mobility, it is equally important to ensure that safety standards are upheld to protect lives.

Kamarul Khatoon’s untimely death has left an entire family devastated, and two others are fighting for their lives. Authorities must act swiftly to prevent such horrifying accidents from happening again.
