The brutal murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi has taken a new turn as Meghalaya Police filed a massive 790-page chargesheet in the case. His wife Sonam, along with her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha and three associates, has been accused of plotting Raja’s murder and attempting to destroy evidence. The chargesheet details how the conspiracy unfolded, strengthening the case against the accused. Raja’s grieving family has demanded nothing less than the death penalty for Sonam and the others involved.
Meghalaya Police Files 790-Page Chargesheet
Meghalaya Police submitted the extensive chargesheet in court on Friday. The report not only names Sonam as the main conspirator but also includes her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha and his three associates — Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Singh Rajput, and Anand Kurmi. The police have invoked sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to murder conspiracy and evidence destruction.
The chargesheet also names three more individuals — Lokendra Tomar, Balla Ahirwar, and Shilom James — who allegedly assisted the main accused in destroying evidence after the crime. Police say the charges are backed by strong evidence including call records, financial transactions, and witness statements.
Family’s Demand for Death Penalty
Raja’s elder brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi, expressed the family’s deep anguish and demanded the harshest punishment. He stated that their only demand is the death penalty for Sonam, Kushwaha, and the three associates directly involved in the killing.
Vipin told reporters that the family has not yet gone through the entire chargesheet, but they are satisfied with the police investigation and the charges framed. For them, this was not only a murder but a betrayal within the family, which deserves the strictest form of justice.
Allegations Against Sonam’s Brother Govind
The case has also raised questions about Sonam’s brother Govind. After her arrest, Govind met the victim’s family in June, claiming his family had severed ties with Sonam. He promised to fight for justice and insisted that he opposed her actions.
However, Vipin has now alleged that Govind deceived them. According to him, Govind has secretly hired lawyers to defend Sonam in Shillong, trying to protect his business interests. This revelation has added more drama to the already sensational case, as Govind appears to be supporting Sonam while pretending to side with Raja’s family.
How the Murder Happened
According to police, Raja and Sonam traveled to Shillong on May 21. They later went to Sohra, also known as Cherrapunji. On May 26, both went missing. A large search operation was launched with the help of Sohra Police, the Special Operations Team, NDRF, SDRF, and local villagers.
On June 2, Raja’s body was discovered in a deep gorge in the Umlai region near the famous Wei Sawdong waterfall. Investigators soon uncovered that Sonam was involved in an extramarital affair with Raj Kushwaha. The two planned Raja’s murder together, hiring three contract killers to execute the plan.
Police allege that during the trip, in Sonam’s presence, Rajput, Chauhan, and Kurmi pushed Raja into the gorge, killing him. The body was hidden, and attempts were made to cover up the crime. Within a week, police arrested Sonam, Kushwaha, and the three killers from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
Conspiracy and Evidence
The chargesheet describes how the conspiracy was planned in detail. Communication between Sonam and Kushwaha reveals months of planning, including financial arrangements for hiring the killers. Digital evidence like phone calls, chat messages, and location tracking show Sonam’s role in luring Raja to Shillong under the guise of a honeymoon.
The police report also states that after the murder, the accused tried to destroy mobile phones, erase data, and mislead investigators. This led to additional charges of tampering with evidence.
Arrest of Additional Accused
As the investigation progressed, police arrested three more individuals — Lokendra Tomar, Balla Ahirwar, and Shilom James. They allegedly helped dispose of evidence and misdirect police inquiries. Their involvement shows that the conspiracy was supported by a wider network beyond the five prime accused.
Sonam’s Calls From Jail
Sonam, now in Shillong jail, reportedly makes weekly phone calls to her family under prison rules. Sources claim she has spoken several times with her parents and brother Govind. Vipin alleged that Govind even traveled to Shillong recently to arrange legal help for Sonam, contradicting his earlier statements.
This has further angered Raja’s family, who believe Govind’s actions prove he is siding with his sister rather than supporting justice.
Family’s Struggle for Justice
For the Raghuvanshi family, Raja’s death has been devastating. They say the betrayal by his wife has deepened their grief. The family has vowed to fight until the culprits are given the death penalty. Vipin emphasized that only the harshest punishment can serve justice for such a calculated and cruel crime.
He added that society must see this case as an example, where betrayal and planned murder within a family are punished severely. The family also plans to travel to Shillong to review the chargesheet submitted in court.
A Case That Shocked Indore and Beyond
The murder case has captured national attention. The idea that a wife could plot her husband’s murder with her lover and hired killers has shocked the public. The story has become a talking point not only in Indore but across India, raising questions about trust, betrayal, and greed.
Legal experts say the detailed 790-page chargesheet ensures a strong prosecution case. However, the defense will likely challenge the evidence and the claims of conspiracy. The trial is expected to be long, with multiple witnesses and extensive documentation presented in court.
The Raja Raghuvanshi murder case remains one of the most shocking crime stories of recent times. The chargesheet has strengthened the prosecution’s case against Sonam, her lover Raj Kushwaha, and their associates.
As the trial moves forward, Raja’s family continues to demand justice in the form of the death penalty. They believe only the strictest punishment will honor Raja’s memory and send a strong message against such brutal crimes.
The case also highlights deeper issues of betrayal and the misuse of trust within families. For now, all eyes are on the courts in Meghalaya, where the fate of Sonam and her associates will be decided. The Raghuvanshi family waits for closure, hoping that justice will be served without delay.
