President Droupadi Murmu paid a compassionate visit to the AIIMS Bhubaneswar Burn Unit on Sunday. She met a 19-year-old girl from Balasore who allegedly attempted self-immolation after facing repeated sexual harassment.

The President’s visit was part of her scheduled Odisha tour but gained national attention due to the sensitivity of the case.

AIIMS Bhubaneswar Burn Unit: President Interacts With Victim

The girl is currently undergoing treatment in the specialized burn care unit at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Sources inside the hospital confirmed that her condition remains critical but stable.

President Murmu spent several minutes with the victim and her family. She assured them of complete support from both state and central authorities.

Background: What Happened in the Balasore Incident?

The 19-year-old, reportedly a student, set herself on fire earlier this month in Balasore. According to initial reports, the act was triggered by repeated sexual harassment by a known local individual.

The victim had allegedly submitted multiple complaints, but no immediate action was taken. Frustrated and distressed, she attempted suicide by setting herself ablaze.

She was rushed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar with over 50% burn injuries.

President Murmu Deeply Moved, Calls for Swift Justice

President Murmu, originally from Odisha, was visibly emotional during her interaction. She spoke to the girl in her native dialect, offering comfort and strength.

“She is not alone. The entire nation stands with her,” the President reportedly said.

She also urged authorities to take strict and speedy action against the accused. “Justice delayed is justice denied,” she added in her address to media and hospital officials.

Medical Condition: What Doctors Say About the Burn Victim

Doctors treating the girl stated that her burns are extensive but manageable. A senior physician from the burn unit said:

“She is receiving round-the-clock care. Infection control is critical at this stage.”

Her recovery may take several months and will likely include skin grafts and trauma counselling.

Public Reaction and Social Media Outrage

The Balasore incident has triggered massive outrage across Odisha and other states. Social media users expressed anger over alleged police negligence. Many demanded strict action against the accused and accountability from local authorities.

The hashtags #JusticeForBalasoreGirl and #AIIMSVisitMurmu trended on Twitter and Instagram.

Odisha Government Responds: Action Initiated Against Accused

Following public pressure and the President’s visit, Odisha Police has taken swift steps. The main accused has been arrested. Internal inquiry against the local police station staff is also underway.

A senior official from the Odisha Home Department confirmed that disciplinary action will follow if lapses are proven.

Central Government Promises Support

Union Health Ministry has extended medical support through AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Union Minister for Women and Child Development has also spoken to the family.

An official statement from the PMO praised President Murmu’s compassionate outreach and called it “a reminder that survivors deserve dignity, not delay.”

President Murmu: A Personal Connection to Odisha

Born in Mayurbhanj, Odisha, Droupadi Murmu is the first tribal woman President of India. Her visit held emotional significance, especially since the victim is also from a marginalized community.

The President emphasized the importance of faster trials in crimes against women, especially those from vulnerable sections.

AIIMS Bhubaneswar: Burn Unit Facilities and Crisis Support

The AIIMS Burn Unit in Bhubaneswar is one of the top critical care facilities in Eastern India. The unit is equipped with isolation wards, plastic surgery support, and mental health services.

Doctors confirmed that the girl is receiving both physical and psychological care. A clinical psychologist has been assigned to help her cope with the trauma.

Survivors Need Protection, Not Delays: Women’s Rights Groups

Several women’s rights activists have responded strongly after the President’s visit. They highlighted the need for:

  • Speedy filing of FIRs in harassment cases

  • Better protection for complainants

  • Fast-track courts for gender-based violence

One activist said, “It took a national-level tragedy for authorities to act. That must change.”

Family of the Victim Thanks President for Her Visit

The victim’s parents thanked President Murmu for meeting their daughter. “We were feeling helpless,” her father said. “But the President’s words gave us hope.”

They also appealed to the Odisha CM and PM for financial and legal assistance.

Legal proceedings have begun in the case. The accused has been produced before a local court in Balasore.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also taken suo moto cognizance and is expected to send a fact-finding team.

The next few days will be crucial for the investigation and the victim’s treatment.
