KKN Gurugram Desk | As COVID-19 continues to make a quiet yet steady comeback across India, the active coronavirus cases have surpassed the 4,300 mark, signaling a concerning rise in infections. According to the latest data released by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the country recorded 276 new active cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total to 4,302 active cases.

Although the numbers are significantly lower than peak pandemic periods, the steady daily increase in active cases is prompting renewed attention from both central and state health departments.

COVID-19 Case Summary (As of June 4, 2025)

Metric Data
Total Active Cases 4,302
New Cases (Last 24 Hours) 276
Total Deaths (Recent Surge) 7
Worst-Affected State Kerala (1,373 Active Cases)

State-Wise Breakdown: Where Are Cases Rising Most?

Over the past 24 hours, five states have reported the highest increase in active COVID-19 cases:

  1. Delhi – 64 new cases

  2. Gujarat – 64 new cases

  3. Uttar Pradesh – 63 new cases

  4. West Bengal – 60 new cases

  5. Maharashtra – 59 new cases

Top 5 States by Total Active Cases:

  • Kerala: 1,373 cases

  • Maharashtra: 510 cases

  • Gujarat: 461 cases

  • Delhi: 457 cases

  • West Bengal: 432 cases

Kerala continues to be the worst-hit state, contributing nearly 32% of all active COVID cases in India.

COVID-19 Related Fatalities: 7 Deaths Reported So Far

A total of seven deaths have been reported in connection with the recent COVID-19 spike:

  • Maharashtra: 4 deaths

  • Delhi: 1 death

  • Gujarat: 1 death

  • Tamil Nadu: 1 death

Health authorities are investigating whether these cases involved underlying conditions or reflected emerging virus variants.

Is This a New Wave? What Experts Say

Though the numbers remain relatively low, epidemiologists and virologists are advising caution. The sudden uptick in cases, especially from metro areas like Delhi and Ahmedabad, could indicate a localized surge or variant-based outbreak.

Possible Reasons for the Spike:

  • Lower mask compliance in crowded places

  • Laxity in testing and reporting

  • Unreported mild or asymptomatic cases

  • Seasonal flu-like symptoms being ignored

Public health experts have urged renewed surveillance, testing in hotspot zones, and advisories for high-risk populations, including the elderly and immunocompromised.

Government’s Response and Guidelines

The Ministry of Health has not yet imposed any restrictions but has advised states to monitor hospital admissions, stock up on oxygen and essential drugs, and reinvigorate testing infrastructure, particularly in districts showing spikes.

Advisory Highlights:

  • Encourage symptomatic individuals to test for COVID-19

  • Reinforce usage of masks in hospitals and public transport

  • Isolation protocols for those testing positive

  • Regular RT-PCR testing in healthcare settings

The Center has also asked for state-wise preparedness reports, particularly from the five states with the highest number of cases.

Public Reaction and Ground Reality

In places like Kerala, Delhi, and Maharashtra, there is growing unease among residents, especially those who recall the devastation caused during earlier waves in 2020 and 2021.

Resident Voices:

  • Ravi Menon (Kochi): “The government should immediately issue mask mandates for airports and hospitals.”

  • Anita Sinha (Delhi): “We can’t afford to ignore early signs again. Schools should take precautionary steps now.”

What Should You Do If Symptoms Appear?

Health experts recommend the following if you develop fever, cough, or cold:

  • Get an RT-PCR or Rapid Antigen Test

  • Isolate yourself from elderly or vulnerable individuals

  • Monitor oxygen saturation and fever

  • Avoid public gatherings for at least 5-7 days

You can contact the national COVID-19 helpline 1075 or your local health department for assistance.

Looking Ahead: Will There Be a National Alert?

As of now, no nationwide alert has been issued, and the situation is being managed at the state level. However, if the case trajectory continues to rise or mortality increases, the Ministry of Health may revisit containment protocols and consider issuing fresh national advisories or restrictions.

While the country is far from the crisis of 2021, the emergence of over 4,300 active COVID-19 cases and a consistent daily rise demand vigilance. It’s crucial that citizens and state authorities work proactively to prevent another wave.
