The national capital woke up to warm weather on Saturday as the minimum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 28.7°C, which is 0.8 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). However, residents may get some relief later in the day, as the IMD has predicted rain accompanied by thunderstorms across several parts of the city.

The weather department has also forecast that Delhi’s maximum temperature will hover around 37°C, keeping it close to the higher end of the usual temperature range for late June.

Rain and Thunderstorms Likely in Delhi, IMD Warns

The IMD’s latest bulletin warns of intermittent rainfall in Delhi and NCR (National Capital Region) areas due to active monsoon conditions in northern India. Thunderstorms with gusty winds may impact daily life, especially in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging.

“There is a strong likelihood of localized showers with thunder and lightning by evening. People are advised to avoid open areas during storms and secure loose outdoor items,” said an IMD official.

Monsoon Gains Momentum Across India

While Delhi braces for a wet spell, monsoon 2025 is actively advancing across several parts of the country. States including Kerala, Chhattisgarh, and Uttarakhand are experiencing intense rainfall, raising concerns about floods, landslides, and transport disruptions.

Heavy Rainfall in Kerala: Orange Alert Issued in 5 Districts

In southern India, Kerala continues to face the brunt of the monsoon. The India Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Alert for five districts, warning of very heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours.

Local authorities have been instructed to remain on high alert, especially in vulnerable regions where landslides and flash floods are common during monsoon peaks.

Chhattisgarh Faces Monsoon Surge: Yellow Alert in 17 Districts

The monsoon has picked up pace in Chhattisgarh, with the IMD issuing a Yellow Alert for 17 districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall. Many parts of the state have already recorded above-average precipitation, leading to saturated soil conditions.

Farmers have welcomed the rains, though urban areas are witnessing traffic jams and power cuts due to the downpour.

Uttarakhand Hit by Landslides and Flood Warnings

In the hilly terrain of Uttarakhand, continuous rainfall has triggered landslides, particularly along major highways. The Badrinath National Highway has been temporarily closed due to debris and road blockages. Water levels in rivers like the Alaknanda and Mandakini are rising dangerously, prompting local authorities to issue warnings to pilgrims and tourists.

“We are monitoring the situation round the clock. Travelers are advised to check weather conditions before planning visits to hilly areas,” said a state disaster management official.

Pan-India Weather Outlook: What to Expect in Coming Days

The IMD’s pan-India forecast suggests that the next 3–5 days will see widespread rainfall activity across the country, especially in central and northern India. States like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall due to the strengthening of the monsoon trough.

This seasonal weather pattern is crucial for India’s agriculture sector, particularly for the sowing of kharif crops such as rice, pulses, and maize. However, excessive rainfall may also cause localized flooding and crop damage in certain areas.

Safety Advisory for Residents During Heavy Rainfall

As India enters the core monsoon phase, experts recommend the following safety tips during extreme weather events:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during thunderstorms or heavy rain.

  • Stay away from open fields, trees, and power lines during lightning.

  • Clear drains and rooftops to prevent waterlogging.

  • Keep emergency kits, power backups, and essential items ready.

  • Follow updates from IMD, state disaster departments, and local administration.

Public Response and Preparedness

Citizens in Delhi and other rain-affected regions have expressed mixed reactions. While the showers provide much-needed respite from the summer heat, the accompanying humidity and traffic woes are causing daily disruptions.

Social media platforms are flooded with videos of flooded streets, waterlogged underpasses, and commuters wading through knee-deep water. Hashtags like #DelhiRains, #Monsoon2025, and #IMDAlert are trending, reflecting the public’s real-time engagement with weather updates.

The monsoon season 2025 is asserting its presence across India, from Delhi to Kerala, bringing a mix of relief and challenges. While the cooling rains help mitigate heat waves and water shortages, they also pose threats like urban flooding, landslides, and travel disruptions.

Residents are advised to stay updated with official IMD forecasts and take all necessary precautions during this high-impact weather season.
