Jammu and Kashmir is reeling under the impact of devastating rainfall that has broken a 115-year-old record. The torrential rains have triggered multiple landslides and flash floods, bringing chaos across the region. Among the worst-affected areas is the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage route, where a massive landslide near Ardhkumari has claimed 34 lives so far. Officials confirmed that 28 others are injured, and several remain missing. Across the state, the death toll has risen to 41 due to rain-related incidents. Relief and rescue operations have been intensified after rainfall levels decreased slightly.

Record Rainfall Brings Disaster

The Meteorological Department revealed that between Tuesday and Wednesday, Jammu recorded 296 millimeters of rainfall, the highest in the last 115 years. This unprecedented downpour has caused widespread destruction, particularly in pilgrimage zones where thousands of devotees from across India visit daily. The Vaishno Devi route witnessed heavy damage due to landslides, leading to casualties among pilgrims from states such as Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and other parts of North India.

Pilgrims Stranded as Trains Cancelled

Northern Railway canceled several trains operating on this route in response to heavy rain and frequent landslides. Routes of many trains were diverted, while the Katra-Srinagar train service remained functional. The cancellations left thousands of devotees stranded in Jammu and Kashmir, with many unable to return home. Reports suggest that large groups of pilgrims who had traveled from different states are facing severe hardships due to disrupted transportation and unsafe conditions.

Government Response to the Tragedy

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha conducted a high-level meeting on Wednesday to review the situation. He directed officials to accelerate relief and rescue operations and personally briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah on the developments. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also held discussions with local legislators to ensure aid reached affected families promptly. He later thanked the Prime Minister for extending wholehearted support to the people of Jammu and Kashmir during the crisis.

Air Force and NDRF Join Relief Efforts

To strengthen rescue operations, the Indian Air Force dispatched a C-130 transport aircraft carrying relief supplies. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have also been deployed in large numbers. Rescue operations faced initial challenges due to relentless rain, but with improving weather, teams were able to speed up evacuation and aid distribution. The commitment of rescue workers has been praised for saving lives under difficult conditions.

Casualties and Identification of Victims

BJP legislator Jugal Kishore Sharma from Reasi confirmed that 29 victims have been identified while five remain unidentified. He added that 14 injured pilgrims are receiving treatment in local hospitals, while eight others have been admitted to Katra hospital. Of these, four are under strict medical observation. The official death toll has reached 34 on the Vaishno Devi route, marking one of the worst tragedies in recent years along the pilgrimage path.

NDRF Expands Operations

NDRF DIG told news agencies that heavy rainfall over the past two days has caused flooding not only in Jammu but also in parts of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. To manage the situation, additional teams have been sent to Jammu by air, and four more teams were dispatched by road from Ludhiana. At present, 18 NDRF teams are stationed across Jammu and Kashmir to assist with ongoing operations. Their role has been crucial in recovering bodies, treating the injured, and preventing further casualties.

Broader Impact Across North India

The unprecedented rains have not only affected Jammu and Kashmir but also disrupted life in neighboring states. Flash floods have been reported in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, where overflowing rivers have caused damage to roads, houses, and crops. Experts warn that climate change and poor infrastructure planning may be intensifying the impact of extreme weather events in the region. The crisis has highlighted the need for long-term disaster management strategies.

Pilgrims and Families in Grief

The tragedy on the Vaishno Devi route has left families in deep grief, with many struggling to locate missing relatives. Survivors recalled scenes of panic as rocks and mudslides swept through the pilgrimage path. Many devotees who had come with hopes of spiritual blessings now face trauma and loss. Authorities have set up helplines to help families trace their loved ones, and arrangements are being made to send bodies of identified victims back to their home states.

Political and Public Reaction

Political leaders across India have expressed condolences for the lives lost. Prime Minister Modi assured that the central government will extend every possible support. Social organizations have also come forward to provide food and shelter to stranded pilgrims. The tragedy has sparked debates on the preparedness of pilgrimage sites to handle natural disasters, especially during monsoon months when landslides and cloudbursts are frequent.

The Vaishno Devi landslide caused by record rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir has turned a sacred pilgrimage into a tragedy. With 34 lives lost on the route and 41 deaths across the state, the scale of the disaster is immense. Rescue operations by NDRF and the Indian Air Force continue, but the incident has raised serious questions about disaster management in vulnerable regions. As Jammu and Kashmir recovers from the heaviest rainfall in more than a century, the focus now lies on ensuring safety for pilgrims and preventing such large-scale tragedies in the future.
