Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked India’s 79th Independence Day with his twelfth consecutive flag hoisting at the Red Fort. Addressing the nation, he delivered one of the longest Independence Day speeches in history, surpassing Indira Gandhi’s record of eleven speeches. His address touched on national security, economic reforms, self-reliance, and bold new missions for India’s future.

Warning to Neighbouring Country Over Terrorism

PM Modi began by recalling the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22 in Jammu and Kashmir. He described how terrorists from across the border targeted tourists, killing innocents after identifying them by religion. He said husbands were shot before their wives and fathers before their children.

The Prime Minister revealed that the outrage led to “Operation Sindoor,” an unprecedented military action. He explained that the army had been given full freedom to decide strategy, targets, and timing. The operation caused massive damage inside Pakistan, with details still emerging. Modi claimed Pakistan’s leadership remains unsettled by the scale of destruction.

India’s Stance Against Nuclear Blackmail

Responding to recent comments by Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir, Modi declared that India would not tolerate nuclear blackmail. He emphasized that terrorism, its supporters, and those providing safe havens are all enemies of humanity. He asserted that India’s “new normal” is to respond to terror with decisive force.

He also referred to the Indus Waters Treaty, calling it one-sided and unjust. Modi reiterated that the rivers originating in India should serve Indian farmers, stating, “Blood and water cannot flow together.”

Announcements on Space and Technology

Modi praised India’s advancements in space technology, noting the return of Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla from the space station. He announced that India is moving towards building its own space station and is preparing for the Gaganyaan mission.

He underlined that India’s space sector reflects the nation’s growing self-reliance and global ambition.

Major GST Reform for Households

In a significant economic announcement, Modi promised a major cut in Goods and Services Tax (GST) on essential household items before Diwali. He described it as a “double Diwali” gift to citizens, aimed at easing living costs.

The Prime Minister noted that he has been working to reform GST for eight years, countering opposition criticism that the tax has harmed small businesses.

Launch of Mission Sudarshan Chakra

From the Red Fort, Modi announced “Mission Sudarshan Chakra,” a project to create a powerful indigenous defence system. Inspired by Lord Krishna’s weapon, this system will neutralize enemy attacks and enable counterstrikes.

The mission aims to develop, expand, and modernize this national security shield by 2035. Modi said it would serve both as a defensive barrier and an offensive platform, strengthening India’s military capability.

Commitment to Farmers and Self-Reliance

PM Modi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to farmers, fishermen, and livestock owners, calling them top priorities. Without naming former US President Donald Trump, he addressed trade disputes indirectly by stressing the need for domestic production.

He urged Indians to manufacture everything from fertilizers to jet engines and EV batteries domestically. Modi vowed to stand “like a wall” against any policy threatening farmers’ interests, asserting that India will never compromise on their welfare.

Context of US Trade Tensions

The speech came days after the US imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, citing India’s purchase of Russian crude oil. This raised the total tariff to 50%, sparking debates over trade relations. While Modi avoided direct reference to the US or tariffs, his emphasis on self-reliance was widely interpreted as a response to such pressures.

A Speech of Resolve and Direction

PM Modi’s 103-minute address blended national pride with policy commitments. From confronting cross-border terrorism to advancing technological self-sufficiency, his vision centered on a confident, resilient India.

His warnings to hostile neighbours, economic relief for citizens, and ambitious defence projects reflect a broad agenda for India’s future. The address reinforced his position as a leader determined to protect India’s sovereignty while fostering growth and innovation at home.
