KKN Gurugram Desk | Prayagraj is witnessing the grand Mahakumbh Mela 2025, with over 30 lakh devotees taking a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam on the fourth day of the event. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for the region, predicting rain and fog for Wednesday and Thursday.

IMD Predicts Rain and Fog for Prayagraj

IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy shared insights into the current weather conditions, stating:

“There is a possibility of rain and fog conditions today in southeast Uttar Pradesh, where the Mahakumbh Mela is ongoing. Even if the fog isn’t too dense, its impact will be significant. An Orange Alert has been issued for today and tomorrow.”

Western Disturbances and Temperature Drops

  • The current Western Disturbance (WD) is over Pakistan, with induced cyclonic circulation in South Haryana.
  • The WD is moving eastward, which may lead to thunderstorms in hilly regions, snowfall in the hills, and rain in West UP.

Roy added:

“Rainfall is expected to intensify from January 18, especially in hill states. Another Western Disturbance is likely around January 21-22, which could bring rain to the plains.”

Dense Fog and Falling Temperatures Predicted

  • Temperatures are expected to drop by 2-3°C in the next few days.
  • Dense fog conditions may develop in Punjab, Haryana, North UP, and Delhi on January 17-18.
  • Delhi may witness moderate to dense fog with a noticeable temperature drop from Thursday morning.

Heavy Rainfall Alert for Other Regions

  • Heavy rainfall was recorded in Tirunelveli (13 cm) on Tuesday.
  • Andaman & Nicobar Islands may experience heavy rainfall today, while Tamil Nadu is expected to see moderate to heavy rainfall by January 18.

Mahakumbh in Numbers

  • Day 4 Attendance: Over 30 lakh devotees took a holy dip at Sangam by 6 PM on Thursday.
  • Makar Sankranti Celebration: On January 14, more than 3.5 crore devotees participated, setting a record.
  • Total Attendance So Far: Over 7 crore devotees have attended the Mahakumbh, making it the world’s largest religious congregation.
