The sensational rape case at a Kolkata law college has escalated into a major political flashpoint. The BJP has shared images showing the main accused, Manojit Mishra, alongside senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders — including MP Abhishek Banerjee, sparking renewed attacks on the Mamata Banerjee-led government. The allegation: “Kolkata gangrape accused TMC link”.

What’s the Case About?

On the evening of June 25, a 24-year-old law student was allegedly gang‑raped inside a room within the South Calcutta Law College campus in Kasba, Kolkata. The horror unfolded when three men—Monojit Mishra (a former student turned lawyer), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukherjee (20)—reportedly locked the victim inside between 7:30–8:50 pm, assaulted her, and even recorded the act to threaten her silence.

Police arrested all three accused within 24 hours. Video evidence from seized mobile phones also supported the survivor’s testimony. The NCW (National Commission for Women) has taken cognizance, intensifying calls for strict action and accountability.

BJP Charges TMC With Cover-Up

BJP leaders have deployed the hashtag #ProtectorsOfRapists after revealing photos allegedly featuring Mishra alongside senior TMC figures, including Abhishek Banerjee, state health minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, and councillor Kajari Banerjee.

IT-cell head Amit Malviya posted:

“OUTRAGEOUS! Manojit Mishra… has direct links with the most powerful in the TMC.” timesofindia.indiatimes.com+7ndtv.com+7hindustantimes.com+7

BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari added,

“Yet again Mamata Banerjee’s govt is found standing with the accused!” ndtv.com+1hindustantimes.com+1

BJP leaders also accused the state government of allegedly hiding the victim’s location and shielding the accused.

TMC’s Response and Denial

TMC has firmly rejected BJP’s allegations. Party leaders emphasized that photographs were from social events years ago, not evidence of direct political protection.

Trinamool Chhatra Parishad chief Trinankur Bhattacharya clarified:

“He was a junior member in 2019… we cannot predict who someone becomes in 2025.” newindianexpress.com+3ndtv.com+3indiatoday.in+3

Health Minister Shashi Panja praised police for swift action within 12 hours and accused the BJP of politicizing a heinous crime. She urged them to support the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill instead of using the incident for electoral gain.

TMC leaders added that the perpetrators “deserve the strictest possible punishment” and that the main accused is not currently active in any student union.

Political Fallout and Campus Outcry

The incident has reignited criticism of campus safety and political interference in educational institutions.

  • BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari and CPM’s Sujan Chakraborty condemned TMC’s student wing, alleging it promotes lawlessness on campuses and called for legal oversight of student unions.

  • SFI, AIDSO, and SUCI staged protests at the law college and Kasba police station, highlighting parental fears and demanding stronger campus safety measures.

  • Protestors tore down images of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee in acts of public outrage.

PC Ghosh, TMC’s student wing head, denied any active TMCP unit at the institution while condemning misuse of the case for political gain.

Legal Process & Investigation

The accused—Mishra, Ahmed, and Mukherjee—have been remanded to police custody. Authorities are completing medical examinations and gathering forensic evidence.

The NCW has demanded a report within 72 hours. TMC reiterated that a swift and impartial investigation is underway.

Past Precedence: RG Kar Horror

This incident occurs just ten months after the infamous RG Kar Medical College rape and murder of a trainee doctor. That case triggered nationwide protests and prompted the Supreme Court to intervene.

Critics say the recurrence of campus-related sexual violence highlights systemic failures in women’s safety and governance under the ruling dispensation.

What’s at Stake?

  • Campus Safety: The episode raises pressing questions about institutional responsibility and the influence of political student wings in academic spaces.

  • Politicization of Crime: TMC accused BJP of turning a criminal case into a campaign weapon, while BJP insists this reflects endemic collusion.

  • Legislation: TMC’s push for the Aparajita Bill—which would enforce harsher punishments for sexual violence—throws the spotlight onto central government delays.

  • Public Trust & Election Implications: With West Bengal Assembly elections approaching in 2026, both parties are battling to present themselves as champions of women’s rights and public security.

The Kolkata law college gangrape has escalated into a fierce political confrontation: BJP accuses TMC of shielding rapists, while TMC denies links, spotlighting the need for fast justice and institutional reform. The incident has reignited concerns about campus safety, political influence, and the ongoing struggle to implement robust anti-rape laws like the Aparajita Bill.

As the investigation unfolds, all eyes remain on how the police and judiciary handle this case—and whether this tragedy sparks meaningful changes in policy and public discourse.
