KKN Gurugram Desk | The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) has released the seat matrix for B.Tech programs across Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) for the academic year 2025-26. This comprehensive guide provides detailed information on seat distribution, reservation policies, and essential documents required for admission.

Total B.Tech Seats in IITs for 2025

For the 2025-26 academic session, a total of 18,160 seats are available across 23 IITs in India. This marks an increase from the previous year’s total of 17,760 seats, reflecting the institutes’ efforts to accommodate more students.

Category-Wise Seat Distribution

The seats are allocated based on the Government of India’s reservation policies. The distribution is as follows:General (Open): 7,025 seats

  • General (Open) – PwD: 339 seats

  • General – EWS: 1,727 seats

  • General – EWS – PwD: 87 seats

  • OBC – NCL: 4,656 seats

  • OBC – NCL – PwD: 238 seats

  • SC: 2,586 seats

  • SC – PwD: 138 seats

  • ST: 1,300 seats

  • ST – PwD: 64 seats

  • Female Supernumerary: 1,598 seats

These allocations ensure representation across various social and economic groups, adhering to affirmative action policies.

Reservation Policies in IITs

The reservation structure in IITs is designed to promote inclusivity:

  • General – EWS: 10%

  • OBC – NCL: 27%

  • SC: 15%

  • ST: 7.5%

  • Persons with Disabilities (PwD): 5% horizontal reservation across all categories

  • Female Supernumerary Seats: Introduced to improve gender balance, these are additional seats over and above the sanctioned strength.

These reservations are in line with the guidelines set by the Government of India.

JoSAA Counselling 2025: Key Dates and Process

JoSAA counselling for 2025 commenced on June 3, 2025. The process involves multiple rounds where candidates can fill in their choices, lock them, and participate in seat allocation based on their JEE Advanced ranks. It’s crucial for candidates to adhere to the schedule and complete each step within the stipulated timelines.

Essential Documents for IIT Admission

Candidates must prepare the following documents for verification during the admission process:

  1. Class 10 Certificate: For date of birth verification.

  2. Class 12 Marksheet: Proof of qualifying examination.

  3. Category Certificate: Applicable for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/GEN-EWS candidates.

  4. PwD Certificate: For candidates claiming reservation under PwD category.

  5. Passport-sized Photographs: Recent photographs as per specifications.

  6. Seat Allotment Letter: Issued by JoSAA.

  7. Photo ID Proof: Aadhaar card, passport, or any government-issued ID.

  8. Medical Certificate: As per the format specified by JoSAA.

  9. OCI/PIO Card: For Overseas Citizen of India/Persons of Indian Origin candidates.
