India faces a widespread health issue today—about one in every five Indian women suffers from anemia. Recent WHO data reveals that nearly half of adolescent girls and women in South Asia are anemic. That translates to nearly 259 million women struggling with low hemoglobin levels. Global health agencies like WHO, UNICEF, and SAARC have urged governments to act urgently to curb this public health challenge.

Understanding Anemia: What It Means

Anemia occurs when the body lacks sufficient red blood cells (RBCs) or hemoglobin. Since RBCs carry oxygen, a deficiency directly impairs energy and health. Iron deficiency is the most common cause worldwide. Women, especially due to menstruation and pregnancy, are more vulnerable than men. A healthy female adult typically has hemoglobin levels around 11 g/dL. Levels between 7–9 g/dL indicate mild anemia, often manageable through diet. However, when hemoglobin drops below 6 g/dL, serious anemia sets in, requiring immediate medical care.

Causes and Risk Factors

Anemia can be triggered by multiple factors. Excessive destruction of red blood cells, chronic blood loss (such as heavy menstrual bleeding), poor iron or folate intake, infections or long-term illness, and genetic conditions all contribute. Women face higher risk due to menstruation. Other vulnerable groups include individuals with kidney disease, diabetes, heart disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, or those recovering from surgery.

Symptoms to Watch

Initial signs include fatigue, weakness, difficulty concentrating, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, and irritability. If untreated, anemia can escalate into chest pain, headaches, loss of appetite, tongue inflammation, dry mouth, ulcers at the mouth corners, hair fall, swallowing difficulty, and yellowing of skin, nails, or gums.

Lifestyle Tips to Prevent and Manage Anemia

Balanced nutrition is key. Include foods rich in iron such as green leafy vegetables, legumes, nuts, fruits, whole grains, eggs, and meat if non-vegetarian. Pregnant women should take iron supplements as advised by a doctor. Women experiencing heavy menstruation should seek medical help as blood loss leads to iron depletion. Premature infants are also at risk, so emphasize iron-rich foods for them too.

Simple home remedies may help boost iron:
Blend carrot or beetroot with apple and add a teaspoon of honey, consume once daily. Eat a ripe banana twice daily with honey. Soak ten raisins overnight and eat them on an empty stomach. Have tomato and apple juice. Consume dark green vegetables—they contain more iron. A spoonful of honey daily helps due to its iron, copper, and magnesium. Eating one apple daily helps. Soak seven almonds overnight and eat them peeled in the morning. If you include animal products, consider one serving of meat or eggs weekly, since non-vegetarian iron is more easily absorbed. These suggestions align with advice shared by Dr. Shweta Mendiratta, head of gynecology at Maringo Asia Hospital, Faridabad.

For mild cases, dietary adjustments often suffice; for moderate to severe anemia, medical intervention combined with diet restoration is necessary.

Untreated anemia affects daily productivity, mental focus, physical strength, and overall quality of life. For pregnant women, it increases risks during childbirth. Children born to anemic mothers often face developmental delays. At a macro level, anemia impacts national healthcare costs, workforce efficiency, and institutional burden.

Community Role and Call to Action

Community health programs, school screening drives, and public information campaigns can raise awareness about anemia prevention. Regular hemoglobin testing, especially during adolescence and pregnancy, should become routine. Governments and healthcare bodies should strengthen nutrition education, iron-fortified food supply, and easy access to supplements.
