KKN Gurugram Desk | Veteran actress and Mathura MP Hema Malini has recently faced criticism from Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand for her support of the Banke Bihari Corridor project in Vrindavan. The Shankaracharya questioned her understanding of Sanatan Dharma, referencing past rumors about her religious conversion during her marriage to actor Dharmendra.

Background on the Banke Bihari Corridor Project

The Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan is a significant pilgrimage site attracting thousands of devotees daily. To manage the increasing footfall and enhance the pilgrim experience, the Uttar Pradesh government proposed a redevelopment plan for the temple’s surroundings, known as the Banke Bihari Corridor. This project aims to improve infrastructure, ensure better crowd management, and provide amenities for visitors.

Hema Malini, representing Mathura in the Lok Sabha, has been a vocal proponent of this initiative. She believes that the corridor will facilitate smoother darshan for devotees and boost tourism in the region. In her statements, she emphasized the need for modernization while preserving the sanctity of the temple.

Shankaracharya’s Criticism

Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand expressed strong opposition to the corridor project, arguing that it could disrupt the traditional sanctity of the temple. He criticized the government’s approach, stating that any changes to religious sites should involve consultations with religious leaders and adhere to established customs.

In his remarks, the Shankaracharya also targeted Hema Malini personally, questioning her authority to comment on Hindu religious matters. He referenced longstanding rumors about her and Dharmendra’s alleged conversion to Islam to facilitate their marriage, suggesting that this disqualifies her from making decisions about Hindu temples.

Clarification on Religious Conversion Rumors

The rumors about Hema Malini and Dharmendra converting to Islam have circulated since their marriage in 1980. At the time, Dharmendra was already married, and under the Hindu Marriage Act, he could not legally marry a second time without divorcing his first wife. Speculations arose that the couple converted to Islam to circumvent this legal hurdle.

However, both Hema Malini and Dharmendra have consistently denied these allegations. In various interviews, Dharmendra stated that he never changed his religion and dismissed the rumors as baseless. Hema Malini has also refrained from discussing the matter publicly, emphasizing that their personal life should remain private.

Public Reaction and Political Implications

The Shankaracharya’s comments have sparked a debate on the intersection of religion and politics. Supporters of Hema Malini argue that her contributions to the development of Mathura and Vrindavan should be the focus, rather than unverified personal history. They contend that her efforts to improve infrastructure and promote tourism are in the best interest of the region.

Critics, however, align with the Shankaracharya’s perspective, expressing concerns that the corridor project might compromise the temple’s traditional values and religious significance. They advocate for a more cautious approach that involves religious authorities in the decision-making process.

The controversy surrounding Hema Malini’s support for the Banke Bihari Corridor highlights the complexities of implementing development projects in areas with deep religious significance. Balancing modernization with the preservation of cultural and religious heritage remains a delicate task. As discussions continue, it is essential for all stakeholders to engage in open dialogue, ensuring that progress does not come at the expense of tradition
