CBSE’s big decision: Now only NCERT books will be used from class 1 to 8

In a landmark educational reform, the CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) has issued a directive requiring all affiliated schools to use only NCERT textbooks from classes 1 through 8. Until now, the mandate applied only to classes 9 through 12. This new policy is aligned with the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, focusing on ensuring uniform curriculum standards, equity in learning, and consistent quality across CBSE schools in India.

Education officials highlighted that many schools have previously relied on private publisher textbooks, which often fall outside the national curriculum framework, increase costs for parents, and create disparities in learning outcomes. With this directive, CBSE aims to eliminate those discrepancies and promote a cohesive academic experience for students at the foundational level.

‘Operation Sindoor’ Module Added to Syllabus

Alongside the textbook mandate, CBSE has announced the inclusion of a special NCERT module titled Operation Sindoor. Developed by NCERT, this module is designed to educate students about India’s defence preparedness, military response strategies, and national security imperatives.

Operation Sindoor will be included in two segments: one for students in classes 3 to 8 and another for those in classes 9 to 12. The module will include detailed coverage of India’s strategic response during the Pahalgam attack, with approximately 8 to 10 pages devoted to the topic. By incorporating real‑life cases into the curriculum, the module aims to foster patriotism, strategic awareness, and civic responsibility among young learners.

Nationwide Audit for School Safety

In a parallel directive, the Ministry of Education has ordered all states and Union Territories to conduct a comprehensive audit of school infrastructure to ensure student safety and welfare. The audit will assess fire safety measures, emergency exits, electrical systems, and structural integrity. Schools must report their findings and immediately rectify any noted issues.

To support this effort, the ministry has mandated schools to collaborate with local fire services, medical agencies, and police departments. Regular training sessions, mock emergency drills, and preparedness workshops are now mandatory to build a culture of safety awareness across all campuses.

Mental Health and Emotional Well‑being in Schools

Recognizing the need for holistic education, the Ministry has also instructed schools to implement psychological support systems. This includes providing counseling services, setting up peer support networks, and organizing community engagement initiatives. The objective is to ensure emotional well‑being, reduce stress and anxiety among students, and create a supportive learning environment.

Schools must also train teachers to identify early signs of emotional distress and refer students to professionals when needed. Curriculum integration of topics such as mindfulness, conflict resolution, and empathy building is also encouraged.

Why These Changes Matter

The CBSE’s new policy package reflects a shift toward standardized, safe, and inclusive education. Uniform NCERT textbooks across primary and middle classes will reduce educational disparity and lower costs for families. The inclusion of Operation Sindoor introduces an educational focus on national identity and strategic values, which is rare in standard school syllabi.

The safety audits and psychological wellness measures by the Ministry signify a growing recognition of schools as environments requiring both physical security and mental health care.

These reforms resonate with NEP 2020 goals, emphasizing a holistic approach to education. The central themes include equitable learning opportunities, quality instructional materials, student safety, and emotional health.

Implementation Timeline and School Preparedness

CBSE has directed all schools to transition to NCERT textbooks starting from the upcoming academic year. Training workshops are being organized for teachers to adapt to the new syllabus modules, including Operation Sindoor. School administrators have been instructed to refrain from using alternative textbooks unless absolutely necessary.

Simultaneously, state education departments are expected to complete campus safety audits within a set deadline and submit compliance reports. Mental health and counseling programs are to be rolled out in collaboration with NGOs and youth welfare groups.

Digital versions of NCERT materials, including the Operation Sindoor module, are also being prepared to facilitate access in rural and semi‑urban areas. The aim is to bridge the digital divide and ensure equal learning opportunities across socio-economic backgrounds.

Educational Equity Through Standardization

By mandating NCERT books from classes 1 to 8, CBSE ensures that all students receive uniform content, regardless of their school’s location or financial status. This move reduces overreliance on commercial publishers and aligns all schools with the national academic framework.

The Operation Sindoor module adds value by introducing students early to themes like defence strategy, national unity, and crisis response, empowering them with knowledge beyond textbooks.

Safety audits and emotional well‑being policies elevate the standard of educational infrastructure, ensuring schools are safe spaces for physical and mental growth.

Potential Impact and Challenges

While the reforms reflect a strong policy direction, effective implementation will depend on several factors. Teachers must be adequately trained to teach the new module interactively. Schools must commit resources to infrastructure upgrades. Mental health support systems require qualified staff and ongoing investment.

Stakeholders like parents and teachers must also understand the importance of these changes. Community awareness initiatives and parent‑teacher interactions will be essential in building support for the reforms.

These policy decisions mark a major shift in India’s institutional approach to education, moving away from fragmented, market‑driven content toward a systemic, values-informed structure. NCERT standardization ensures consistency, Operation Sindoor empowers strategic awareness, and safety and well‑being initiatives protect and nurture students.

CBSE and Ministry directives are paving the way for a curriculum that is integrated, secure, and socially relevant.
