The Bihar Police Subordinate Services Commission (BPSSC) has released an official notification for recruitment in the Bihar Government’s Prison and Correctional Services Inspectorate under the Home Department (Prison). The vacancies are specifically for the position of Assistant Superintendent (Ex-Servicemen JCO/NCO). Online applications for these posts will begin on August 30, 2025, and the last date to apply will be September 30, 2025.

According to the commission, a total of 25 vacancies are available under this recruitment drive. Of these, 9 posts are unreserved, 6 are reserved for Scheduled Castes, 1 for Scheduled Tribes, 3 for Extremely Backward Class, 2 for Backward Class, 2 for women from Backward Class, and 2 for Economically Weaker Sections.

Eligibility Criteria

The recruitment is open only for Indian citizens who are ex-servicemen, specifically retired Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) or Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) from the Indian Army. Both men and women are eligible to apply.

The term “ex-serviceman” refers to individuals who have served in the regular Army, Navy, or Air Force of the Union of India, either as combatant or non-combatant, but excludes those who have served in Defense Security Corps, General Reserve Engineer Force, Lok Sahayak, or paramilitary forces.

Applicants are eligible if:

  • They have retired from service and are receiving pension.

  • They were discharged due to medical standards or conditions beyond their control and are receiving disability or medical pension.

  • They have been honorably discharged at their own request before completing full service.

Additionally, serving personnel who are scheduled to retire before the last date of application submission will also be considered eligible.

Educational Qualification

The minimum educational requirement for this post is graduation or an equivalent qualification recognized by the state government.

However, ex-servicemen who have only passed matriculation but have completed at least 15 years of continuous service in the armed forces will also be considered eligible for these positions.

Age Limit

The maximum age limit for applying to the post of Assistant Superintendent (Ex-Servicemen JCO/NCO) is 50 years as of August 1, 2025. Candidates beyond this age will not be considered eligible.

Recruitment Process

The selection process will involve two stages: a preliminary written examination and a main written examination.

The preliminary examination will consist of a single paper of 200 marks containing 100 multiple-choice questions. The duration of the test will be 2 hours. The questions will be related to General Knowledge and Current Affairs.

Candidates securing less than 30 percent marks in the preliminary examination will not be eligible to appear in the main examination. The main examination will further test the candidates’ knowledge and suitability for the post.

Application Fee

The application fee has been set at ₹100 for candidates from all categories. The fee must be paid online during the registration process.

How to Apply

The application process will be completely online through the official BPSSC website, bpssc.bihar.gov.in. Applications will open on August 30, 2025, and remain available until September 30, 2025. Candidates are advised to apply well before the deadline to avoid last-minute technical issues.

Applicants must carefully fill in their personal and service-related details, upload scanned documents, and complete the payment process. After submission, candidates should download and keep a copy of the confirmation page for reference.

Importance of This Recruitment

The recruitment of ex-servicemen for the role of Assistant Superintendent under the Prison and Correctional Services reflects the state government’s intention to utilize the discipline, experience, and leadership qualities of retired defense personnel. Their background in managing men and maintaining discipline makes them suitable for the supervision of correctional facilities.

By providing opportunities to JCOs and NCOs, the government is also recognizing the contribution of defense personnel and ensuring their reintegration into civil services after retirement.

Career Prospects and Responsibilities

The role of Assistant Superintendent involves overseeing prison administration, ensuring discipline among inmates, supervising staff, and implementing correctional programs. Candidates selected for this position will work directly under the Home Department (Prison) and will play a crucial role in maintaining order and security within Bihar’s correctional facilities.

The government expects that ex-servicemen appointed under this recruitment will bring efficiency, accountability, and organizational skills to the prison administration system.

The BPSSC recruitment for 2025 presents a unique opportunity for ex-servicemen JCOs and NCOs to continue contributing to society through civil service. With 25 vacancies and a transparent selection process involving written examinations, the commission aims to appoint capable individuals who can handle the responsibilities of prison management.

Interested candidates should complete their applications between August 30 and September 30, 2025, via the official portal. The eligibility conditions, educational qualifications, and age limit must be carefully reviewed before applying.

This recruitment not only strengthens the prison system in Bihar but also honors the service of ex-soldiers by offering them a meaningful role post-retirement.
