Mahindra Cars Become Cheaper Ahead of GST 2.0 Implementation

The Indian automobile market has received big news as Mahindra has already rolled out new prices across its portfolio based on the revised GST 2.0 framework. The government is set to implement the updated GST structure from September 22, but Mahindra has applied the changes early. This move makes several of the company’s popular models cheaper by up to ₹1.56 lakh. Importantly, every vehicle in Mahindra’s portfolio now offers savings of more than ₹1 lakh, creating a golden opportunity for buyers.

Early Adoption of GST 2.0 by Mahindra

The GST revision announced under GST 2.0 aims to rationalize tax rates for different vehicle categories. While most automakers are expected to adjust prices after September 22, Mahindra has surprised customers by offering reduced prices immediately. Buyers can now save significantly on models ranging from the Bolero to the premium XUV700.

The company has not specified discounts variant by variant but has provided a broad list showing average savings. Depending on the model, the benefit ranges from ₹1.01 lakh to ₹1.56 lakh.

New GST Benefits on Mahindra Models

The price advantage varies across Mahindra’s popular models. The Bolero and Bolero Neo now offer benefits of about ₹1.27 lakh due to the lower GST rate. The XUV3XO Petrol delivers savings of ₹1.40 lakh, while the XUV3XO Diesel provides the maximum benefit of ₹1.56 lakh.

The Thar 2WD Diesel becomes cheaper by around ₹1.35 lakh, and the Thar 4WD Diesel offers a benefit of ₹1.01 lakh. Buyers of the Scorpio Classic save ₹1.01 lakh, while Scorpio N buyers enjoy a reduction of about ₹1.45 lakh. The Thar Roxx shows a price cut of ₹1.33 lakh, and the flagship XUV700 is now available with a saving of ₹1.43 lakh.

These savings are direct results of the revised GST calculations, which bring relief to prospective SUV buyers.

GST 2.0 Guidelines and Impact on Car Prices

The new GST 2.0 structure is based on engine capacity, vehicle size, and category. For smaller petrol and petrol-hybrid cars, GST has been reduced to 18 percent, provided the car has an engine capacity of up to 1200 cc and length under four meters. Similarly, CNG and LPG cars meeting the same conditions also qualify for 18 percent GST.

Diesel and diesel-hybrid cars with engines up to 1500 cc and length under four meters also benefit from the lower 18 percent GST, replacing the earlier 28 percent rate.

Luxury and mid-size cars, however, are taxed differently. These vehicles, which include large SUVs, MUVs, MPVs, and crossovers with ground clearance above 170 mm, now fall under the 40 percent GST bracket. Earlier, such vehicles attracted 28 percent GST plus 22 percent cess, totaling 50 percent tax. With GST 2.0, the overall tax burden is reduced to 40 percent, offering a 10 percent relief for buyers.

Mahindra’s Strategy to Attract Buyers

By implementing the revised GST benefits ahead of schedule, Mahindra has positioned itself strategically in the highly competitive SUV market. This proactive move is expected to attract more buyers, particularly during the festive season when demand usually peaks.

The early price cuts also give Mahindra an advantage over rivals who are waiting until September 22 to adjust their prices. Customers planning to buy a Scorpio N, Thar, or XUV700 now have added motivation to make the purchase without delay.

Models Eligible for GST 2.0 Discounts

The Bolero and Bolero Neo, both highly popular in semi-urban and rural areas, become more affordable under the new GST rules. The XUV3XO, available in both petrol and diesel variants, shows significant price drops, making it appealing to younger buyers seeking a feature-rich compact SUV.

The Thar continues to be a lifestyle SUV with strong demand, and reduced prices on both 2WD and 4WD variants will likely increase bookings. The Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N remain bestsellers, and the new price benefits are expected to boost their already high sales volumes.

The premium XUV700, known for advanced technology and strong performance, becomes more accessible with the new GST-driven reduction.

Competitive Edge in the SUV Segment

Mahindra dominates the SUV market in India, and the GST cuts strengthen its position further. Rivals like Tata, Hyundai, and Toyota will also benefit from GST 2.0, but Mahindra’s early adoption gives it a marketing edge.

Consumers now see Mahindra SUVs as better value propositions with reduced tax burdens, powerful performance, and robust features. The company’s wide portfolio, covering budget-friendly to premium SUVs, allows it to appeal to a broad audience.

GST Relief for Customers

The reduction in GST on certain vehicle categories has been a long-standing demand of both customers and manufacturers. For buyers, the new tax structure means lower upfront costs and more affordability. In the case of luxury SUVs, the effective tax burden drops by 10 percent, which translates into lakhs of rupees in savings.

For example, buyers of the XUV3XO Diesel gain up to ₹1.56 lakh in direct savings. Similarly, those opting for the Scorpio N or XUV700 enjoy over ₹1.40 lakh in benefits. This level of price reduction makes these SUVs more appealing and competitive in the market.

Broader Implications of GST 2.0

The revised GST is expected to boost car sales in India, particularly in the SUV segment, which continues to dominate the market. Lower prices will encourage fence-sitters to make purchase decisions sooner, increasing overall demand.

Manufacturers like Mahindra benefit as higher volumes help offset reduced per-unit revenue caused by tax cuts. At the same time, customers benefit from lower prices, creating a win-win scenario.

Mahindra’s decision to apply GST 2.0 benefits early has provided buyers with immediate relief. Models such as the Bolero, XUV3XO, Thar, Scorpio Classic, Scorpio N, Thar Roxx, and XUV700 are now cheaper by ₹1.01 lakh to ₹1.56 lakh. The GST reduction not only makes these SUVs more affordable but also adds significant value in a highly competitive segment.

With prices slashed ahead of the official GST 2.0 rollout on September 22, Mahindra has taken a customer-first approach. Buyers planning to purchase an SUV this month have a strong reason to choose Mahindra, as the combination of price cuts and tax benefits delivers unmatched savings.
