2006 Mumbai Train Blasts: All 12 Accused Acquitted

The Bombay High Court acquitted all 12 individuals. This was in the 2006 Mumbai local train blasts case. They were declared innocent.

High Court Overturns Convictions

The Bombay High Court on Monday overturned convictions. This concerned 12 people. They were involved in the 2006 Mumbai train blast case. The court acquitted them. This was due to a lack of evidence. The court stated the prosecution failed. It could not prove the case against them. This verdict comes 19 years later. The terrorist attack had shaken Mumbai’s Western Railway. Over 180 people died. Many others were injured.

“Difficult to Believe Accused Committed Crime”

Justices Anil Kilor and Shyam Chandak led the special bench. They stated the evidence presented was insufficient. It was not enough to convict the accused. The court said the prosecution failed entirely. They could not prove the case. “It is difficult to believe the accused committed the crime,” the court stated. “Therefore, their convictions are cancelled.”

Immediate Release Ordered

The bench refused to uphold sentences. Five convicts faced the death penalty. The remaining seven had life imprisonment. The court acquitted all of them. The court ordered immediate release. This is if they are not wanted. They must not be wanted in other cases.

Special Court Convicted in 2015

A special court had convicted 12 people. This happened in 2015. Five received the death penalty. Seven others got life imprisonment. On Monday, the High Court delivered its verdict. The convicts appeared via video conferencing. They were brought from various state prisons. They thanked their lawyers.

Seven Blasts in Mumbai Local Trains

Seven blasts occurred on July 11, 2006. They hit Mumbai local trains. This was at various locations. All were on the Western Line. Over 180 people were killed. Many others sustained injuries.
