KKN Gurugram Desk | Muzaffarpur Junction Railway Station has emerged as the number one station in ticket sales via Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) across the East Central Railway (ECR) zone. With a record average of nearly 4,000 tickets sold daily through ATVMs, Muzaffarpur has surpassed major stations including Patna Junction, positioning itself as a digital leader in unreserved ticketing.

The performance figures, released by Sonepur Division on Friday, reflect a significant leap in per-terminal transaction rate, showcasing passenger preference for digital, queue-free ticketing using smart cards and UPI payments.

  • Muzaffarpur leads ECR with an average of 3,963 ATVM tickets sold per day

  • Followed by Patna Junction (2,357 tickets/day) and Khagaria (1,844 tickets/day)

  • Sonepur Division ranks highest in ECR in both ATVM usage and smart card integration

  • Modern payment methods like UPI and QR code scanning now available on ATVMs

  • Senior DCM Roshan Kumar presented a smart card to DRM Vivek Bhushan Sood to promote cashless, digital ticketing

What Are ATVMs and Why Are They Important?

Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) are self-service kiosks installed at railway stations to facilitate:

  • Unreserved ticket booking

  • Platform ticket issuance

  • Quick cancellation and reissue options

  • Bypassing long queues at manned counters

These machines are part of Indian Railways’ effort to digitize railway operations, reduce human dependency, and enhance the passenger experience through technology.

Muzaffarpur’s Digital Milestone

Out of six ATVMs currently functional at Muzaffarpur Junction, the station has recorded an impressive average sale of 3,963 tickets per day—the highest in the East Central Railway zone.

This success can be attributed to:

  • Efficient machine placement at high footfall points

  • Active support by ATVM facilitators to guide new users

  • Integration with UPI payments and QR code scanning

  • Increasing awareness about smart card usage

Top Performing Stations in ECR (ATVM Ticket Sales per Day)

Rank Station Daily Avg. Tickets
1 Muzaffarpur Junction 3,963
2 Patna Junction 2,357
3 Khagaria 1,844
4 Hajipur 1,514
5 Begusarai 1,423
6 Mansi 847
7 Sonepur 801
8 Saharsa 762
9 Patliputra Jn. 489
10 Naugachia 459

These figures underscore the growing acceptance of digital ticketing solutions in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.

Smart Ticketing Goes Cashless with UPI

In a major push for cashless travel, passengers can now:

  • Use smart cards issued by Indian Railways

  • Scan QR codes displayed on ATVMs to pay via UPI apps (PhonePe, GPay, Paytm, etc.)

  • Easily top-up their cards or make direct payments

This move has made ticket booking faster, safer, and more accessible, especially for tech-savvy passengers.

Role of Railway Officials in Promoting ATVM Use

During a recent event, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM) Roshan Kumar handed over a smart card to Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Vivek Bhushan Sood as a symbolic gesture to encourage staff and passengers alike to adopt digital modes.

DRM Sood praised Muzaffarpur’s performance and called it a model for other divisions, emphasizing the need to replicate such success stories across India.

Benefits of ATVMs for Passengers

  • No long queues: Book tickets without standing in long lines

  • 24/7 availability: Many machines operate even beyond counter hours

  • Multi-language support: User-friendly interface in English, Hindi, and regional languages

  • Multiple payment modes: Cash, smart cards, QR-based UPI

Passenger Feedback: Positive Shift Toward Digital

Several daily passengers from Muzaffarpur and Patna have expressed satisfaction:

“Earlier, buying a general ticket meant standing in long queues and missing trains. With ATVMs, I just use my phone and QR code,” said Ramesh Singh, a daily commuter to Hajipur.

“These smart cards are convenient for regular travelers. Just top them up and tap,” added Rekha Kumari, a college student from Begusarai.

Challenges and the Road Ahead

Despite the impressive progress, a few hurdles remain:

  • Low digital literacy in some rural regions

  • Machines sometimes remain non-functional due to maintenance delays

  • Need for more awareness campaigns in non-urban belts

  • Language and UI improvements for elderly passengers

To combat this, the railway is deploying ATVM facilitators who assist users and encourage adoption.

Sonepur Division: ECR’s Digital Leader

The Sonepur Division continues to lead within the ECR zone for:

  • Highest number of smart card transactions

  • Most consistent per-terminal ticketing performance

  • Active engagement with passenger feedback mechanisms

Officials credit regular reviews, staff training, and feedback-driven deployment of ATVMs for their success.

Aligning with Indian Railways’ Digital India Vision

Muzaffarpur’s performance directly supports the Ministry of Railways’ broader goals:

  • Reduce dependency on manual counters

  • Increase paperless and contactless services

  • Strengthen railway’s contribution to Digital India

The modernization of ticketing is part of Indian Railways’ vision to transform passenger services in the post-COVID and AI-driven travel era.

Muzaffarpur’s emergence as the top ATVM-performing station marks a significant leap in India’s rail digitization journey. As more passengers embrace smart ticketing solutions, the focus must now shift to scaling infrastructuretraining personnel, and ensuring reliability of systems.

With consistent government support and technological upgrades, ATVMs can soon become the primary mode of unreserved ticketing across India—ushering in a new era of efficient, digital-first rail travel.
