KKN Gurugram Desk | India is witnessing a notable uptick in COVID-19 cases, with active infections reaching 3,961 as of June 2, 2025. The national capital, Delhi, reported the death of a 22-year-old woman with a pre-existing lung condition, marking one of four fatalities recorded in the past 24 hours. Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi are among the states experiencing the highest number of active cases.

Key Highlights

  • Active Cases Nationwide: 3,961

  • New Cases in Last 24 Hours: 203

  • Recent Deaths: 4 (Delhi, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu)

  • States with Highest Active Cases: Kerala (1,435), Maharashtra (506), Delhi (483)

  • Dominant Variants: Omicron sub-variants LF.7, XFG, JN.1, NB.1.8.1

Delhi’s Situation

Delhi has reported 47 new COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day increase in recent weeks, bringing the total active cases to 483. The city also recorded the death of a 22-year-old woman with a history of pulmonary tuberculosis, who succumbed to bilateral lower respiratory tract infection. This marks the fourth COVID-related death in Delhi during the current surge.

Kerala’s Surge

Kerala continues to lead in active COVID-19 cases, with 1,435 reported. Despite only 35 new cases in the last 24 hours, the state has seen a significant increase from 430 active cases on May 26. A 24-year-old woman with multiple comorbidities, including decompensated chronic liver disease, died due to COVID-19 complications.

Maharashtra and Other States

Maharashtra reported 21 new cases, bringing its active caseload to 506. A 44-year-old man with acute respiratory distress and aortic valve issues died in the state. Other states like Gujarat, West Bengal, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu are also witnessing a rise in cases, with active cases ranging from 189 to 338.

Emerging Variants

The recent surge is attributed to the emergence of Omicron sub-variants LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1. These variants are noted for higher transmissibility but are currently associated with mild symptoms. The World Health Organization is monitoring these variants, though no immediate global threat has been declared.

Government Response

Health authorities emphasize that most infections remain mild and manageable at home. However, they urge continued vigilance, including mask-wearing, social distancing, and vaccination. Hospitals have been advised to ensure bed and oxygen availability to handle potential increases in severe cases.

Public Advisory

  • Stay Informed: Follow updates from official health departments.

  • Vaccination: Ensure vaccinations are up to date.

  • Preventive Measures: Continue practicing mask-wearing and hand hygiene.

  • Seek Medical Attention: If experiencing symptoms, consult healthcare providers promptly.

The recent rise in COVID-19 cases serves as a reminder that the pandemic is not over. While the situation is under control, with most cases being mild, continued adherence to preventive measures is crucial to prevent further spread and protect vulnerable populations.
