Bihar Pension Hike Sparks Political Tug-of-War: Tejashwi Yadav

KKN Gurugram Desk | The recent announcement by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to increase social security pensions from ₹400 to ₹1100 per month has sparked a fresh round of political confrontation. While the JD(U)-led government claims this move is part of its pro-poor governance model, Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav alleges that the decision was driven by “electoral fear and political pressure.”

The announcement comes just months ahead of the 2025 Bihar Assembly Elections, making it a key flashpoint between the ruling NDA and the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance), spearheaded by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

What Did CM Nitish Kumar Announce?

On Saturday, CM Nitish Kumar unveiled a series of welfare initiatives aimed at uplifting the state’s economically weaker sections, including:

  • Increasing all categories of social security pensions from ₹400 to ₹1100/month

  • Providing 3% interest subsidy on loans for Jeevika women (SHG members)

  • Doubling the honorarium of Jeevika workers

  • Offering ₹2 lakh financial support to 94 lakh poor families for livelihood generation

These announcements were positioned as part of the government’s commitment to inclusive development, but the political opposition has other interpretations.

Tejashwi Yadav Reacts: “Nitish Kumar Acted Under Pressure”

Reacting strongly to the CM’s declaration, Tejashwi Yadav, the RJD leader and face of the Mahagathbandhan, said the state government increased pensions under pressure, fearing the growing public support for the opposition alliance.

“We had already declared in our manifesto that we would raise the pension from ₹400 to ₹1500 per month. The current government copied our vision out of political anxiety,” said Tejashwi during a press briefing.

He further claimed that Nitish Kumar’s administration has historically given “the lowest social security pensions in the country”, and is now attempting a “last-minute image makeover” ahead of elections.

“Nitish is Imitating Us”: RJD Spokespersons Echo Sentiment

Earlier, RJD spokesperson Ejya Yadav also made a scathing remark, stating that the Nitish-led NDA is “running scared” of Tejashwi’s public connect and promises.

“This isn’t governance. It’s imitation. The real pressure is the upcoming election and the growing buzz around a Mahagathbandhan victory,” Ejya said.

The party further accused the government of denying Tejashwi credit for policy ideas that are now being implemented under the JD(U) regime.

Tejashwi Yadav Reaffirms Commitment to ₹1500 Pension

While appreciating that the government has taken a step in the right direction, Tejashwi clarified that his promise of ₹1500 per month remains unchanged. He assured that if voted to power, the Mahagathbandhan will not only fulfill this pledge but also review and enhance pension amounts regularly in line with inflation.

“We are firm on our ₹1500 commitment. Inflation is rising, and people deserve more support, not token gestures. We made this promise last year — and we’re not backing off,” he emphasized.

Comparison with Previous RJD Promises

The RJD’s pre-election agenda includes several populist and progressive schemes such as:

  • ₹1500 per month social security pension

  • Reduction of LPG gas prices back to ₹500

  • Unemployment allowance for youth

  • Strengthening rural employment guarantee programs

Political analysts believe that many of the NDA’s recent moves, including this pension hike, are aimed at undercutting the Mahagathbandhan’s rising influence, especially in rural Bihar.

“Copying Our Vision Since December,” Says Tejashwi

Tejashwi also claimed that the state government has been imitating RJD’s announcements since late 2024, when his party released early policy proposals as part of their groundwork for the 2025 election campaign.

“We had predicted that the ruling government would copy our ideas. And that’s exactly what they’re doing, step by step. But the people of Bihar are watching,” he said.

He added that simply mimicking ideas won’t change the anti-incumbency sentiment brewing against the NDA regime.

Is This a Political Masterstroke or Panic Move?

Nitish Kumar’s latest announcements are being seen by many as a strategic counter to Mahagathbandhan’s growing influence in the state. By increasing pensions and providing job-linked financial aid, the government aims to win back trust among low-income families, particularly in rural and semi-urban regions.

However, the RJD sees this as a reactive move, not a proactive one.

“Where was this concern for 20 years?” Tejashwi questioned. “Why now, just months before elections?”

What This Means for the 2025 Bihar Assembly Elections

The Bihar Election 2025 is shaping up to be a high-voltage contest between Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United)-BJP alliance and Tejashwi Yadav’s Mahagathbandhan, which includes RJD, Congress, and Left parties.

With Nitish trying to revive his pro-poor image and Tejashwi focusing on youth, employment, and social justice, both sides are racing to out-promise each other — but the final word will lie with the voters of Bihar.

The increase in social security pensions to ₹1100 per month is undeniably a welcome relief for millions of elderly, disabled, and vulnerable citizens in Bihar. But as the war of words intensifies, the bigger question remains:

Will these welfare announcements translate into real, long-term impact — or are they just election-driven tactics?

As Bihar heads toward a critical electoral battle, the intersection of politics and policy will continue to dominate headlines — and voter sentiment.
