The third Monday of Shravan witnessed an extraordinary spiritual gathering at Baba Garibnath Temple in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. According to head priest Vinay Pathak, more than three lakh devotees, including general Kanwariyas, Dak Kanwariyas, and Bike Kanwariyas, arrived at the temple to perform Jalabhishek and seek blessings of Lord Shiva. The crowd stretched from Ramdayalu Nagar to the main temple premises, turning the entire stretch into a sea of saffron and devotion.

The spiritual fervor began as early as 8 PM on Sunday, when Kanwariyas began lining up outside the temple. As the clock struck midnight, the chanting of “Har Har Mahadev” and “Bol Bam” filled the air, marking the beginning of the Jalabhishek ritual. The local administration and volunteer service groups remained alert and actively managed the influx to maintain order.

The temple authorities expected the influx to continue until Monday afternoon, as the offering of water to the Shiva Linga on Somvari is considered highly auspicious in the holy month of Shravan. By Sunday afternoon, the crowd had already started to swell, and devotees waited patiently to enter the sanctum.

Infrastructure and Amenities for Devotees During Shravani Mela

To cater to the basic needs of the massive crowd, more than 18 water tankers were deployed across the Kanwar route and temple premises. These were arranged through the PHED and Municipal Corporation. Additional tankers filled with Gangajal were stationed at prominent locations like Dharamshala Chowk, Santoshi Mata Temple, Saraiyaganj Tower, DN High School, and Purani Bazaar. The Corporation had brought Gangajal tankers from Pahleja Ghat earlier in the week for distribution during the mela.

Crowd Control Measures: Temple Queue Management

A zigzag queue system was installed at the District School Ground to manage the flow of pilgrims efficiently. Kanwariyas queued from the school up to the temple, taking around four hours to reach the main shrine. Despite the long wait, the atmosphere remained charged with devotion. The service teams and administration guided devotees throughout the route. Many Kanwariyas performed Dand Vat Pranam, starting from Ramdayalu Nagar and Makhansah Chowk, including large numbers of women pilgrims.

Spiritual Programs: Cultural Events Infuse Devotees with New Energy

The spiritual vibe intensified with a cultural evening at RDS College, where devotional performances rejuvenated tired pilgrims. Artists from nine different groups performed Shiva bhajans that resonated with energy and emotion. The evening began with an address by District Arts and Culture Officer Sushmita Jha. The first performance was presented by Buddha Educational and Welfare Trust.

Artists Ruby Kumari and Shreya Jha captivated the audience with their powerful Shiva bhajans. The song “Bol Bam Ke Nara Ba, Baba Ek Sahara Ba…” filled the atmosphere with divine energy. Devotees danced and swayed to the rhythm, turning the Kanwariya camp into a festive celebration of Lord Shiva. Folk-style bhajans like “Basaha Par Bhola Swaar” by Roopak Kumar of Narayan Seva Sthali, “Baba Lene Chali Aau Hamro Apan Nagari…” by Soumya Raj, and a soulful piece by Astha Deepali were among the most applauded.

Accidents Reported: Two Kanwariyas Injured Due to Electric Shock

Amidst the spiritual zeal, two unfortunate incidents involving electric shock were reported. The first mishap occurred at Tent City in RDS College, where a young Kanwariya came into contact with a live wire. Quick action by fellow devotees saved him, and medical personnel at the health camp immediately treated him. He was identified as Vikram Kumar, a resident of Patepur village in Vaishali district. His condition was later reported as stable.

Another incident took place under the Madhaul Flyover, where Saurabh Kumar, a Kanwariya from Dighwara village in Saran district, was injured after coming in contact with a live wire. Nearby devotees acted swiftly and helped him receive immediate first aid. He was later taken to a hospital for further treatment under the supervision of medical officers.

The Devotion Continues Despite Challenges

Despite the massive crowd, long waiting hours, and sporadic mishaps, the spirit of Shravani Mela remained unshaken. From young girls to elderly pilgrims, everyone carried the name of Shiva in their hearts as they performed rituals with unmatched faith. Songs of devotion and cries of “Bam Bam Bhole” echoed through the air, uniting thousands in a common spiritual journey.

The efforts of the local administration, volunteer groups, health workers, and municipal authorities played a key role in ensuring the smooth conduct of the mela. The meticulous crowd management, water supply arrangements, and prompt medical assistance reflected effective coordination and commitment to safety.

Shravani Mela at Baba Garibnath Dham has once again highlighted the spiritual depth and collective devotion of millions of Shiva bhakts. With the third Monday of Shravan drawing such an overwhelming turnout, the upcoming Somvaris are expected to see even higher numbers. The temple town of Muzaffarpur continues to uphold its significance as a sacred site for devotees during this pious month.
