Jharkhand will see a major break from tradition this Independence Day. For the first time in many years, the state’s Chief Minister will not hoist the national flag at Morabadi Ground in Ranchi. Chief Minister Hemant Soren will remain in his ancestral village Nemra on August 15 to perform the shraddh rituals of his father, veteran tribal leader Shibu Soren, who passed away on August 4, 2025.

A Tradition That Will Be Broken This Year

Since the formation of Jharkhand in 2000, the Chief Minister has always hoisted the national flag at Morabadi Ground on Independence Day. The Governor traditionally presides over the celebrations in Dumka, the sub-capital of the state. This arrangement has been a consistent protocol for over two decades.

However, due to the passing of Shibu Soren, this year will be different. The state government announced that Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar will hoist the flag at Morabadi in place of the Chief Minister.

Official Confirmation from State Government

The Jharkhand government officially stated on Monday that the Chief Minister would be absent from the Ranchi event. Hemant Soren will remain in Nemra, his native village, to perform religious rites for his father. The statement also confirmed that the Governor had accepted the government’s proposal to lead the Independence Day celebrations in Ranchi this year.

Shibu Soren, a towering figure in Jharkhand politics and co-founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), died at the age of 81 in a Delhi hospital. His passing marked the end of an era for tribal politics in the state.

Shibu Soren: The Political Icon of Jharkhand

Known affectionately as Dishom Guru among tribal communities, Shibu Soren played a pivotal role in the movement for a separate Jharkhand state. He was instrumental in shaping the region’s political identity, advocating for tribal rights, and influencing state and national politics.

He served multiple terms as a Member of Parliament and was the Chief Minister of Jharkhand three times. His political career, spanning decades, earned him both admiration and controversy. Despite political challenges, he remained a central figure in the state’s political narrative until his last days.

Governor’s Additional Gesture of Respect

Raj Bhavan also announced that, as a mark of respect to the late leader, the Governor will cancel the traditional “At Home” reception hosted at the Raj Bhavan every Independence Day. This annual gathering usually welcomes prominent figures from politics, administration, defense, and other sectors.

The decision reflects the solemn mood in the state following Soren’s death. The Governor’s choice underscores the deep respect held for the departed leader across political lines.

Historical Context of the Morabadi Ceremony

The Morabadi Ground in Ranchi holds significant importance for Independence Day celebrations in Jharkhand. The event draws large crowds and showcases cultural performances, parades by security forces, and public speeches highlighting the government’s achievements and future plans.

For years, the Chief Minister’s presence at this event has symbolized the political leadership of the state. The Governor’s role in Dumka complemented this by representing the unity of governance across the state’s two main administrative centers.

This year’s change is therefore a rare and significant deviation from established protocol.

The Impact of Shibu Soren’s Demise on State Politics

Shibu Soren’s death has left a political vacuum in Jharkhand, especially among tribal communities that saw him as a guiding force. His passing has not only impacted the Soren family but also the ruling JMM, where he was a mentor and advisor.

The mourning period and associated rituals have required Hemant Soren to prioritize family obligations over official duties, leading to this unprecedented shift in Independence Day proceedings.

Hemant Soren’s Political Journey and Current Challenges

As the current Chief Minister, Hemant Soren faces multiple challenges, from governance issues to political opposition. Balancing state administration with personal loss has placed him in a unique and difficult position.

His decision to remain in Nemra for the shraddh is consistent with cultural traditions in the region, where honoring one’s parents is considered a sacred duty.

Security and Logistical Arrangements for August 15

With the Governor now leading the Independence Day program in Ranchi, security arrangements have been revised. State police and administrative officials are coordinating to ensure smooth proceedings, with the same level of ceremonial protocol maintained despite the change in leadership.

The event will still include the national anthem, guard of honor, and cultural presentations. Attendees are expected to pay tribute to both the nation and the late Shibu Soren.

Public Sentiment on the Change

Public reactions to the announcement have been mixed. While many understand the personal circumstances of the Chief Minister, some express disappointment that the tradition will be broken. However, there is widespread agreement that honoring Shibu Soren’s memory is an equally important duty for his son at this time.

Political Reactions Across Parties

Leaders from across the political spectrum have expressed condolences and support for Hemant Soren’s decision. Even opposition parties have acknowledged the significance of family rituals in such moments. The bipartisan tone reflects the respect commanded by Shibu Soren despite political differences.

Looking Ahead to Future Celebrations

While 2025 will be marked by this unusual shift in Independence Day protocol, officials expect the tradition of the Chief Minister hoisting the flag at Morabadi to resume in the coming years. For now, the focus remains on ensuring that this year’s event honors both the spirit of independence and the memory of a key figure in Jharkhand’s history.
