A major fire broke out early Sunday morning on a diesel-laden freight train near Tiruvallur in Tamil Nadu, causing widespread disruption to train services originating from and heading towards Chennai. The incident, which involved four wagons of the freight train, sent thick plumes of smoke into the sky and triggered emergency responses from fire and railway authorities.

The freight train was en route from Manali to Tirupati when the fire erupted in one section, prompting an immediate halt and emergency evacuation procedures. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties, but the intensity of the fire and its implications on railway operations have drawn nationwide attention.

Dramatic Footage Shows Smoke Billowing Across the Tracks

Videos of the incident, which have now gone viral on social media, show large clouds of black smoke rising from the burning train cars, with local residents and railway staff standing at a distance. Emergency fire crews were deployed swiftly to the scene and are still working to bring the flames under complete control.

According to officials from Southern Railway, four diesel tankers caught fire, while the remaining wagons were quickly detached to prevent the blaze from spreading further.

“The fire broke out around 6:30 AM. Immediate measures were taken to isolate the affected coaches and prevent any further escalation,” said a senior railway officer from Chennai Division.

Impact on Rail Traffic: Key Routes Severely Disrupted

Due to the incident, overhead electrical power supply was shut off in the affected section as a safety precaution, leading to the suspension and cancellation of several prominent trains scheduled to depart from Dr. MGR Chennai Central railway station on July 13.

The disruption affected both southbound and westbound trains, including high-speed express services like Vande Bharat, Shatabdi, and Double Decker trains.

Southern Railway Issues Safety Alert

The Southern Railway took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to issue an official alert to passengers:

“Train Service Alert: Due to a fire incident near Tiruvallur, overhead power supply has been turned off for safety reasons. Several trains from Chennai Central have been cancelled. Passengers are advised to check real-time updates before traveling.”

Railway helplines have also been activated to assist stranded passengers and issue refunds or alternative travel arrangements where possible.

Possible Cause: Under Investigation

As of now, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Early speculation points to a possible leak in one of the diesel tankers, which might have ignited due to a spark or overheating. Railway officials have not ruled out technical faults or human error, and a full probe has been initiated.

The Railway Safety Commissioner, along with a team of forensic and fire safety experts, is expected to visit the site later today.

“Our first priority was to ensure the safety of passengers and railway staff. A high-level inquiry will determine the root cause and suggest preventive measures for future,” stated a senior Railway Board member.

Firefighting Operations Still Underway

Fire crews from Tiruvallur, Chennai, and nearby districts have been deployed to tackle the flames. As of the last update, the fire was largely under control but cooling operations were still being conducted to ensure no secondary ignition occurs.

The surrounding area has been cordoned off, and locals have been advised to stay away from the tracks until the situation is fully contained.

Rail Services to Resume Soon

Railway authorities have started clearing the affected tracks. Officials estimate that partial restoration of services may be possible by late evening if no further damage is found to the tracks or overhead wires.

“We are conducting safety inspections. Tracks will only reopen once they are deemed 100% safe for traffic,” a senior railway official said.

Environmental and Safety Concerns Raised

The burning of diesel on such a large scale has raised environmental concerns. Locals near the incident site reported a strong smell of fuel and smoke, leading to health worries for nearby communities.

Environmental experts have called for a review of fuel transport protocols, especially in populated areas. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) may also take suo motu cognizance of the environmental impact of the incident.

The Tiruvallur train fire is a grim reminder of the vulnerabilities in the Indian freight transport system. While no lives were lost, the massive disruption to passenger services, loss of valuable fuel, and potential environmental damage underline the urgent need for better monitoring and safety mechanisms in rail logistics.

Passengers are advised to check Indian Railways official websites or helplines for the latest updates on rescheduled or diverted services from Chennai and other affected stations.
