A major tragedy struck Gujarat on Wednesday morning when the Gambhira Bridge, which connects Anand and Vadodara districts, collapsed due to intense rainfall, resulting in the deaths of three people and fears of more casualties. The incident occurred during heavy monsoon rains that have battered the region over the past 48 hours.

According to local officials and eyewitnesses, multiple vehicles plunged into the river as the bridge gave way, causing chaos and panic. Emergency response teams have been rushed to the site, and rescue operations are currently underway.

Bridge Collapse During Torrential Rain in Gujarat

The Gambhira Bridge, a key route linking Anand and Vadodara, collapsed early Wednesday morning amid relentless monsoon rains. Initial reports indicate that the continuous downpour weakened the bridge’s foundation, causing the structure to give way under pressure.

Several commuters were on the bridge at the time of the collapse, and multiple vehicles, including cars and two-wheelers, fell into the overflowing river. Divers and NDRF teams have been deployed to search for survivors and recover the vehicles.

Congress Leader Reacts, Demands Action

Congress MLA and Leader of the Opposition, Amit Chavda, took to social media to confirm the collapse and express concern over the potential loss of life. In his statement, Chavda said:

“The main Gambhira Bridge connecting Anand and Vadodara has collapsed. Many vehicles have fallen into the river, and there is a possibility of severe casualties. The administration must immediately begin rescue operations and arrange alternate traffic routes.”

His post sparked strong public reactions and raised concerns about the state of infrastructure in flood-prone areas.

Rescue Operations and Emergency Measures

Local administration officials, fire brigades, and disaster management teams have begun rescue efforts, using boats and divers to recover the victims and vehicles. The Gujarat State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been mobilized.

Meanwhile, traffic between Anand and Vadodara has come to a standstill, and alternate routes are being identified to maintain connectivity between the two major districts.

This tragic incident once again puts a spotlight on India’s aging infrastructure, particularly in states prone to monsoon flooding. Poor maintenance, lack of timely inspections, and overloaded bridges often result in such disasters.

Experts have long warned about the risks of structural failure during heavy rainfall, especially in areas where rivers swell rapidly, and drainage systems are inadequate.
