Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Investigators Point to Sudden Power Failure, Await Black Box Data

KKN Gurugram Desk | The tragic Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crash near Ahmedabad on June 12 remains one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent memory. With over 241 lives lost onboard and dozens more on the ground, early assessments by officials suggest a sudden electrical failure shortly after take-off as a leading cause. However, investigators emphasize that final conclusions hinge on black box data analysis.

What Officials Say: Power Failure Emerges as Leading Hypothesis

According to investigators involved in the probe, the aircraft lost electrical power immediately after take-off, likely triggering a shutdown of both engines and critical flight systems. “The lights went out, and the Dreamliner lost thrust,” one official told local media. The aircraft then descended uncontrollably, crashing into a nearby building, resulting in catastrophic loss of life .

This hypothesis hasn’t been confirmed and remains subject to review. Experts caution that full analysis—especially of the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR)—is essential to determine whether power loss, engine failure, or other mechanical fault was the root cause.

The Human Toll: Over 241 Lives Lost in Seconds

The Dreamliner Flight AI‑171, en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, climbed briefly before losing altitude and impact near B.J. Medical College’s hostel. Of the 242 individuals aboard (230 passengers and 12 crew), only one survived, while 241 perished—alongside at least 39 on the ground .

Rescue teams discovered one of the black boxes within 28 hours of the crash, prompting hopes that it would unlock the crash’s mystery .

Black Box Retrieval and Decoding Dilemma

Two flight recorders—CVR and DFDR—have been recovered, although both sustained extensive fire damage The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), supported by the US NTSB, UK AAIB, Boeing, and GE Aerospace, leads the investigation.

A December 2025 Indian lab was not equipped for data retrieval from severely damaged devices, prompting discussions about sending the black boxes to the US for analysis .

  • Civil Aviation Ministry clarified the final decision rests with AAIB and no dispatch has yet been made .

  • The Economic Times confirmed that the US remains a strong backup plan, due to India’s current lab limitations .

Once decoding begins, the data will chart critical flight parameters—engine thrust, flight controls, cockpit communications, electrical systems—a lab versus US scenario still undecided .

Early Clues: Ram Air Turbine Seen Deploying

Preliminary imagery from the crash suggests the deployment of the Ram Air Turbine (RAT)—an emergency power generator that sprouts mid-flight if main engines fail, often due to dual engine or electrical collapse .

Speculation includes:

  • Dual Engine Failure: Investigators wonder if both engines quit power due to fuel contamination, mechanical failure or software errors .

  • Bird Strike or Engine Fire: Videos indicate possible bird ingestion or derailment of take-off configuration.

  • Electrical Blackout: The sudden power loss, light shutdown and RAT deployment suggest compromised systems .

Next Steps: Multi-Agency Investigation in Full Swing

The AAIB-led investigation—bolstered by international agencies—aims to issue a preliminary report in 30 days, with a final report due in 12 months per ICAO protocol .

Key tasks:

  1. Retrieve and decode black box data

  2. Perform analysis in India’s lab or US/UK facility

  3. Flight and engine performance review, including RAT use

  4. Crew actions and cockpit communications

  5. Boeing Dreamliner fleet checks: All Boeing 787s in India have undergone enhanced inspections post-crash .

 Maintenance History & Safety Inspections

Recent inspections show the aircraft had a new right-hand engine installed in March 2025 and the left engine last checked in 2023 (due December 2025). The Air India Chairman described its maintenance record as clean, citing “well-maintained” service history .

What This Means for Boeing and Air India

As the first fatal crash for Boeing 787, the disaster has raised global safety concerns.

  • India issued fleet-wide 787 inspections upon DGCA review .

  • Boeing and GE Aerospace have deployed technical teams to assist domestic investigators .

  • Airlines including Air India have scaled down widebody schedules, citing the fleet implications .

 What to Watch Next

  • Black box decoding progress (India lab vs US/UK)

  • The 30-day preliminary AAIB report

  • Aircraft inspections and Boeing 787 fleet findings

  • Policy reforms for Dreamliner safety and emergency power systems

While investigators now view a sudden power failure as a potential key cause of the Ahmedabad Boeing 787 crash, definitive conclusions await black box decoding. The AAIB-led multi-agency probe, combined with international cooperation, aims to restore confidence in aviation safety and provide closure to the hundreds of affected families.
