JoSAA Counselling 2025 Begins: IIT, NIT, IIIT Seats Increased

KKN Gurugram Desk | In a major relief for engineering aspirants across India, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) has officially begun the JoSAA Counselling 2025 process today. The biggest update this year is the increase in the total number of seats across Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs).

A total of 62,853 seats are up for grabs this year across 128 premier engineering institutions, marking one of the largest single-year seat expansions in recent years.

What Is JoSAA Counselling?

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) is responsible for the centralized counselling process for admissions into:

• 23 IITs

• 31 NITs

• 26 IIITs

• 47 GFTIs, including IIEST Shibpur

Students who have qualified in JEE Advanced and/or JEE Main can participate in JoSAA counselling to secure a seat in these prestigious institutions in programs such as:

• B.Tech

• Dual Degree Programs

• Integrated M.Tech Courses

IIT Admission 2025: 400 New Seats Introduced

This year, the total number of seats in 23 IITs has increased from 17,760 in 2024 to 18,160 in 2025. However, IIT Kanpur has made no change in its intake, maintaining 1,210 seats.

IIT Seat Increase Year-on-Year:

This increase aims to accommodate the rising number of JEE Advanced qualifiers and ensure greater inclusivity.

NIT Admission 2025: 296 Additional Seats

Among the 31 NITs, the total number of seats has risen from 24,229 in 2024 to 24,525 in 2025, adding 296 seats this year.

This includes new programs and seat expansions in core engineering streams such as:

• Mechanical Engineering

• Computer Science and Engineering

• Civil and Electrical Engineering

IIIT Admission 2025: Major Expansion with 1,394 New Seats

The 26 IIITs participating in JoSAA counselling have collectively added 1,394 new seats, increasing the total from 8,546 in 2024 to 9,940 in 2025.

This significant rise includes:

• New programs in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Cybersecurity

• Expansion in existing B.Tech programs

GFTI Admissions 2025: 7 New Colleges Added, 826 Seats Increased

A total of 47 GFTIs are participating in JoSAA Counselling 2025, up from 40 in the previous year. This year’s admissions will be based on 10,228 seats, up from 9,402 in 2024.

• 7 new GFTIs added to the counselling pool

• 826 seats added to GFTI category

Students from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities are expected to benefit the most from this expansion.

JEE Advanced 2025 Results: 54,378 Candidates Qualify

Out of 1,87,223 students who registered for JEE Advanced 2025, 1,80,422 appeared and 54,378 successfully qualified for counselling.

These qualifiers are now eligible to compete for IIT seats through JoSAA. Meanwhile, students with JEE Main ranks can apply for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
