KKN Gurugram Desk | The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for seven districts in Bihar on Tuesday, warning of lightning strikes and winds blowing at 30–40 km/h. The affected districts include Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, and Purnia.

This alert follows an unseasonal drop in both maximum and minimum temperatures across the state on Monday, though the reprieve will be short-lived. From Friday onward, Bihar is expected to face intense heat, with a sharp rise in temperature predicted.

Monday’s Weather Recap: Temperature Dip Across Most Districts

Despite the alert for inclement weather, several districts recorded milder temperatures on Monday. Notable findings:

  • Arrah, Buxar, and Dehri were the hottest cities, each recording a maximum temperature of 40.2°C.

  • The coolest city was Kishanganj, where the minimum temperature dropped to 21.9°C.

  • 27 districts experienced light to moderate rain, driven by high-speed winds.

  • In Madhubani (Andhratharhi), rainfall measured 60.2 mm, the highest in the state.

  • Nalanda saw winds racing at 57 km/h, while Patna experienced 40 km/h winds.

louds Blanket Patna, Rain Likely in Isolated Areas

The capital city, Patna, is under dense cloud cover on Tuesday. According to the IMD forecast, there’s a possibility of thunder and light rain in select locations. On Monday afternoon, Patna faced sudden weather changes:

  • Winds touched 40 km/h, causing dust-laden skies and poor visibility in some pockets.

  • Temperatures also showed a drop:

    • Maximum fell by 0.8°C to 39.8°C

    • Minimum dropped by 1.3°C to 28.7°C

What Is a Yellow Alert and Why It Matters?

A Yellow Alert is issued as a warning of potentially hazardous weather conditions. It doesn’t imply immediate danger but calls for caution from the public and readiness from disaster response teams.

For Bihar, which has a history of lightning fatalities during monsoon pre-season, such alerts are crucial.

Precautions for Yellow Alert Areas:

  • Avoid open fields during lightning conditions.

  • Unplug electronic appliances during storms.

  • Stay indoors if high winds are forecasted.

  • Follow local administration updates on emergency protocols.

When Will the Heat Return? IMD’s Long-Term Forecast

Starting Friday (June 6, 2025), Bihar will begin to experience a significant temperature surge, both during the day and at night.

Expected Weather Trends:

  • Daytime highs may cross 42°C in several districts.

  • Nighttime lows will remain above 29°C, making nights uncomfortable.

  • The rise is linked to dry northwesterly winds and reduced cloud cover, allowing solar radiation to intensify.

Districts Under Heat Threat Later This Week

According to current modeling data:

  • Arrah, Buxar, Rohtas, Gaya, Aurangabad, and Patna will be most vulnerable to heatwave conditions.

  • Humidity levels in regions like Bhagalpur and Katihar may add to the discomfort index, despite slightly lower maximum temperatures.

Rainfall and Wind Forecast: More Showers in North Bihar?

Meteorologists suggest that North Bihar might continue to receive intermittent light showers in the next 48 hours.

  • Madhubani, Supaul, Purnia, and Sitamarhi are expected to experience localized thunderstorms.

  • However, this rainfall won’t be sufficient to significantly cool the state.

  • Eastern Bihar, including Kishanganj and Araria, may get occasional cloudbursts, leading to temporary temperature drops.

Ground Reports: Localized Damage from Windstorms

Some reports from Nalanda and Madhubani mention:

  • Tree branches breaking

  • Power supply disruptions

  • Minor damage to tin roofs in rural pockets

No major casualties or injuries have been reported as of now.

Expert Opinion: Weather in Transition Phase

Dr. R.K. Sinha, a senior climatologist from Patna University, explained:

“Bihar is currently in a transitional weather phase – moving from pre-monsoon instability to a dry, heatwave-dominant cycle. Such sudden fluctuations are typical but must be monitored closely.”

He added that while the monsoon isn’t expected before mid-June, pre-monsoon clouds will bring brief relief, especially in North Bihar.

Advisory for Farmers and Students

The Bihar State Agriculture Department has issued weather-based advisories:

  • Farmers should pause pesticide spraying during thunderstorms.

  • Harvested crops must be covered securely to prevent damage.

  • Students and commuters are advised to carry umbrellas or raincoats for the next two days due to unpredictable rain spells.

As of now, clouds and scattered rain offer temporary relief, but from Friday onward, residents must brace for high heat and humidity. Authorities are on alert, and citizens are advised to monitor weather updates regularly.
