KKN Gurugram Desk | As February nears its end, the weather in Bihar is set to change significantly. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted rainfall and strong winds for several regions in the state. According to the weather department’s latest report, 12 districts in Bihar are expected to experience rain and thunderstorms on February 28 and March 1, 2025. A yellow alert has been issued for these areas, warning residents about potential weather disruptions.

Weather Forecast for Bihar: Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Expected

The IMD has predicted a shift in the weather pattern over Bihar in the coming days. Starting from February 28, several districts, including Madhubani, Nawada, Gaya, and others, are likely to witness thunderstorms accompanied by moderate to heavy rainfall. The weather department has also issued a yellow alert for these areas, indicating that residents should stay prepared for possible disruptions.

The affected districts include West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Shivhar, Madhubani, Kaimur, Aurangabad, Rohtas, Nawada, Jamui, and Banka. In these regions, winds are expected to blow at speeds ranging from 30 to 40 km per hour, which could cause minor damage to crops and trees. The rain is expected to last for a couple of days, and residents are advised to stay cautious during this period.

March Begins with Rainfall: A Shift in Weather

With March approaching, the start of the new month is expected to be marked by rainfall in parts of Bihar. According to weather experts, light rain showers are expected in southern Bihar, including some areas in the northern part of the state. This rainfall will likely be brief but will contribute to the overall shift in weather patterns.

Temperatures are also expected to rise slightly in the following days, with a possible increase of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. However, this rise in temperature will not be uniform across all regions. The increased humidity and rainfall could bring a temporary relief from the earlier heat, providing some comfort to residents who have been experiencing fluctuating weather patterns in recent weeks.

Temperature Changes Across Bihar

On February 27, the temperature in several parts of Bihar showed a noticeable rise. Patna, along with other cities, recorded a slight increase in both maximum and minimum temperatures. In particular, Madhubani, which is located in northern Bihar, recorded the highest temperature of 30.6°C for the day. On the other hand, East Champaran, including the city of Motihari, recorded a relatively cooler temperature of 10.5°C, making it one of the coldest places in the state that day.

These fluctuations in temperature have become a common feature in Bihar’s weather during the transition from winter to spring. The shift between cold mornings and warmer afternoons is causing discomfort for residents, especially those who are not accustomed to such rapid temperature changes.

Cool Weather Expected to Persist in Nawada

In Nawada, a district in southern Bihar, the weather will remain relatively cool for the next few days. According to the Patna Meteorological Center, the region is expected to experience cloudy skies and cooler temperatures for the next two to three days. The minimum temperature in Nawada has dropped slightly, recording between 11 to 13°C on February 27. This drop in temperature has brought relief to residents who were facing the heat earlier in the week.

However, the maximum temperatures have risen in various parts of the district. In Nawada, the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 27°C, while in the border areas of Nalanda district, temperatures could reach as high as 31°C. This sharp contrast between the minimum and maximum temperatures is creating a sense of discomfort for the people of Nawada, who have expressed concerns about the sudden changes in weather.

Understanding the Yellow Alert: What to Expect

The yellow alert issued by the IMD serves as an early warning system for residents in the affected districts. A yellow alert indicates that the weather conditions may lead to temporary disruptions, such as rain, strong winds, and minor damage to infrastructure. The alert also suggests that people should be prepared for any sudden weather changes and take necessary precautions.

Residents are advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms and rain, especially during the peak hours when the winds are expected to be at their strongest. Farmers in the affected areas should take steps to protect their crops and livestock, as the weather conditions may cause damage to agricultural activities.

The IMD has also warned about the possibility of localized flooding in certain areas, particularly low-lying regions. It is advisable for people to stay away from riverbanks and avoid crossing streams during heavy rainfall.

The Impact of Weather on Agriculture in Bihar

Bihar’s agricultural sector is particularly vulnerable to changes in weather patterns. The upcoming rainfall, though beneficial for crops in some areas, could also have a negative impact, especially in districts where crops are not adequately protected. Strong winds can damage standing crops, while excess rainfall may lead to waterlogging in fields.

Farmers are advised to monitor weather updates regularly and take preventive measures to safeguard their crops. In some regions, where wheat and mustard are the primary crops, there is a risk of crop damage due to strong winds and rain. It is crucial for farmers to ensure that their fields are properly drained and that their crops are protected from the adverse weather.

How Residents Can Prepare for the Upcoming Weather

As the weather in Bihar is expected to change rapidly, it is important for residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions. Here are a few tips for preparing for the weather disruptions:

  1. Stay Updated: Keep an eye on weather reports and alerts issued by the IMD. This will help you prepare for any sudden changes in the weather.

  2. Secure Your Property: If you live in areas prone to strong winds, make sure that windows, doors, and roofs are secure. Move any outdoor furniture or objects that could be blown away by the wind.

  3. Avoid Going Outdoors During Storms: If a storm or heavy rain is predicted, it is best to stay indoors. Avoid driving or traveling during these conditions, as roads may become slippery and visibility may be low.

  4. Protect Agricultural Lands: Farmers should take steps to protect their crops from rain and wind damage. Make sure that fields are properly drained to prevent waterlogging.

  5. Emergency Supplies: Ensure that you have essential supplies like food, water, medications, and batteries in case of power outages. It is always better to be prepared in advance for any disruptions caused by the weather.

Bihar is set to experience significant changes in weather over the next few days. The forecasted rain, strong winds, and temperature fluctuations will bring both relief and challenges to the people of the state. While the rain will be beneficial for crops in some areas, it may cause damage in others, particularly those that are not well-prepared for the adverse weather.

The yellow alert issued for 12 districts serves as a reminder for residents to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions. By staying informed, securing property, and preparing for possible weather disruptions, residents can minimize the impact of the changing weather conditions.

As we move into March, temperatures are expected to rise slightly, but the weather will remain unpredictable. It is crucial for the people of Bihar to stay prepared for further changes in the weather and continue to monitor updates from the IMD.
